Grendell:

Then tell me what are YOU collecting when you RENT a DVD, separate from owning a DVD. You didn't proide an answer because there isn't one, This program is designed to manage colections and always has been, a renter collects nothing, except receipts. Whe you go rent title A,and watch it and then return it, you don't posssess title A, you have n;'t collected anything because it was returned, maybe you rent it again next week, you still don't have a collection. You only have a collection when you own the thing, whatever it is.

So with all of your intelligence, grendell what is a renter collecting? That is pertinent. Notice toone and alll that THIS is a very narrow and focused point, I am not referring to ownership in any form. Profiler is program for managing the collections of DVD and Blu-Ray enthusiasts, not for simply creating a list of titles that i can pick up at some library, public or private. I don't want alist of the DVDs that i can "rent" from my public library or from Blockbuster, or even Red Box.. I have no collection to manage relative to those entities. Ace I am neither talking about your decision to keep something which rightfully does not belong to you, even if you paid the fee. I am simply talking about RENTING and how it relates to profiler. One could argue that they want to keep a record of what they watched, you can do that locally or you could even do THAT with a simple spreadsheet.

For the purposes of the above question iam also ignoring that we cannot verify ownership, it is very narrow question.

Crossing the veil into ownership is another story and which seems to escape many, but that raises the issue of that we can't verify ownership which is not the question I am asking.

With all due respect, you don't have any idea of what i am asking or even how to answer it because you can't. The only thing you have the ability to do is answer a question with a question, brilliant maybe tactically but show nothing.

Is it just me or we are on same kind of alternative earth here? Really someone doesn't get it or play a game with us... Seriously...

If you go to blockbuster or whatever videostore and you buy an ex-rental you own the dvd, if you enter in the videostore and stole it you own the dvd (it's wrong but you have it)...

If the dvd had a UPC on it it's the same thing than a dvd bought online or in a store.

We sure like to argue on anything and being the joke of the world wide web...

Moses277 go for it and contribute those dvds when you get them

Perhaps I'd like to keep track of all the DVDs I'd like to own someday in DVDP's Wishlist.  Is that not a legitimate use?

No Nameletmeask again. Since a part of this issue is people wanting toinclude RENTAL titles, not necessarily ex-rentals they have purchased, strictly rentals. What are they collecfting.

Scott:

That's a local issue. I mean that's not a lot different from many of us that include any and all movies in their wishlist regardlessof whether they have been released to DVD Medium or not. So again,if we are talking about rentals;what is being collected. Nothing.

It's not a game,it's a serious question? I am not talking about purchasing, only rental. I presume that what you really want to say is that you have no answer. But it is not a game, I don't play games.

if you are renting it and you want to track such activity you should do so locally. It is one of the simplest concepts to grasp yet you continue to fail to do so. The sad part about it is that we have no way to document whether you OWN said title or are merely renting it and i don't know how we would do so.

I fail to understand why ownership of a DVD is even important.  Do you not track many DVDs in your wishlist that you don't own?  Are they allowed to exist only in your local database?

This doesn't even take into account pre-release profiles that are entered into the database all the time.  Not only can't they be sold or owned, in most cases, they don't even exist.  If they don't exist, how can they be part of your collection?

You forgot one...

"... And much, much more!"

Keeping track of films you have rented would fall under that catagory.  Not that it matters as I am stuck with the same question that has been with me from the start...why do we care?  What harm is done?

To reply or not reply: I'll go with reply, though I may regret it later.

Skip, perhaps if we aren't understanding what you are asking, perhaps it isn't our fault. What does ownership vs. rental have to do with anything? We profile titles no one owns all the time because we potentially could own them and people want to add them to their wishlists. Pre-orders are most obviosu example, btu hardly the only one. It's well established that it is okay to add titles you don't own so long as they meet the general requirements of not being homemade or bootlegs and we've established in this thread that people can and do buy rental DVDs. Therefore, it is okay to add rental DVDs, even if you don't own them.

Perhaps in your opinion, Martian. Not in mine, And no one has answered the fundamental question i have asked.I submit it is because you can't answer it,but THAT is normal around here. From a strictly rentalg POV WHAT is being collected. NOTHING. I will probably pass out if I ever ask a question and someone actually answers it.

Forgive me if this has been brought up as I didn't read all 6 pages, but every single rental disc comes up for sale at some point, be it inventory clearing or store closing.

I wish more had been added before the Hollywood stores were closing, as I had to make many new profiles from picking up cheap ex-rentals.

Also, 99% of the disc ID's matched the retail versions, making it easier to profile.

Ace:

I don't want you to regret it. I want someone to answer the very narrow question I have asked, people do want to catalog what they rent, it seems bizzare to me, but that can be done locally. But if we take RENTAL to the Online then I don;'t see renting as being a collection. My wife rents from Netflix, I don't but i can understand where some might want to track what they have rented, I think Profiler is over kill for that, a spreadsheet would seem a much better tool for that to me. But beyond that my wife is not collecting anything, the discs come and they go. Why should the Online be taken with data from Rentals which are NOT collected. Please note Ace, before answering at this point i am not talking about purchasing ONLY rental. What is being collected? It seem a simple question and the answer is likewise....NOTHING is being collected therefore RENTALS should not be included. Purchasing is whole other can of worms./
