It is as simple as I like for it to be exact as possible to the back cover.... and the rules calls for it to be exact as possible per the cover. Between that and Ken giving us the buttons shows me that is what he wants.

You may feel like... something is close enough. But if I am going to contribute and vote... I am going to make it as close to exact as the program allows. As that is what the rules calls for.

To me nothing is close enough... if I have the ability to get it closer. And the rules ask me to do so.... so that is the only way I will do it.

Match the overview exactly. There are nice buttons where you can use en and em dashes. What could be easier?

Of course, it is of no surprise whatsoever that there is a 5 page thread in the DVD Profiler contribution forums with people arguing about it with each other.

This is what you get , when this is all some members have to look forward to in life. Addicted change it in your personal, lock it and move on. That is what I do (Hong Kong films, CLT result names that are wrong) Contribute once if they vote no and it gets turned down, that's life.

Well, the rules also state that you shouldn't include line-break hyphens. So clearly Ken's intention is not to replicate the look of the overview exactly as on the cover, but rather the information content.

What you are talking about is an exception to the exactly per source rule that we have... but yet which dash to use is not listed as an exception... so that tells me that we use the same dash the source uses.

I am sorry... but this is something that no other member of the site can convince me otherwise on. The only ones that could would be Invelos themselves.

Yeah... I know. It is a sad thing.

Agree with me... don't agree with me.

Get it... don't get it.

either way... I am done with this thread. The changes are contributed. I have all yes votes now. So as far as I am concerned... it is over.

I'm not trying to convince anyone. I'm just trying to get an explanation as to why this seems to be of such an importance that we need a heads up in order to avoid "erroneous contributions".

It seems like some people think it's the end of the world as we know it if someone contributes an overview with a hyphen instead of an en-dash or em-dash.

So tell me - if I can't see the difference between dash, en-dash and em-dash in an overview, can I use just dash, or should I leave the overview blank?

Only the OP knows why he thought it was of such importance.  I believe the only reason Pete responded, and I am sure he will correct me if I am wrong, is because his contributions were being called into question and he was being told that they were incorrect.

The only person who seemed to think that ways was the OP.  All I saw Pete doing was defending his right to contribute the correct dash.  I think he may have misunderstood your position thinking you were telling him he shouldn't.  Again, that is how I saw it, Pete can correct me if I am wrong.

I would say to enter what you see.  If it ends up being incorrect, the person who discovers it is always free to correct it.

DAMN this forum with it's encoding. I had written again a huge amount of good text and it was erased because it "took too long" to post it. And of course I had forgotten that it works this LOUSY way, that I should write the text in notepad or sth and then copy/paste/post.

Anyway, I need to cut it real short now. I have more important things to tend to.

I think this whole issue is about mutual respect for that people are from different parts of the world, and not just one country

We simply need and have to respect each other and where we come from rather than imposing things on each other that are very unfamiliar and strange to them.

I'm too p*ssed now with my large post disintegrating because the lousy programming of this forum, so I'll just say this. I think you need to think further about this issue than just point to Ken, who is one person and who, I bet, has no clue about European grammar.

Two possibilities to solve this:
1) At Login choose permanent Login
2) If you forgot to choose option 1): Use the back-key of your browser when the error message appears. Right-click on any of the buttons of the Invelos site and choose "Open in new Tab". Login on the new tab, return to the tab with your message and send it.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Sorry, but I'm not getting this.  This was started about a Region 1, U.S. locality overview, so naturally, the person writing the overview was probably American and the person entering the overview was probably American, so use of en-dashes or en-dashes is quite common.....and correct.

If you are entering an overview for Region 2, Swedish locality, and because of your "culture" en-dashes and em-dashes aren't used, it's a non-issue for you.  However, if they are used, then they should be entered as such in DVDP.

Pete put it as simply as it can be put.  Match what is on the back cover!  This has nothing to do with respecting people from different parts of the world.  If you don't care to use en-dashes or em-dashes, fine!  But, don't be surprised or upset when someone else corrects them or votes no if you change them incorrectly.

I was going to stay away from this thread since my last post... but curiosity got the better of me this afternoon. So I just wanted to say the Martian is correct with what he said above. While I did make some mistakes in the contribution... the EM-dashes weren't any of the mistakes I made. And the mistakes I did make has since been corrected.

exactly... has nothing to do with respect in any way. Just to do with following the rules exactly as written.
