Good luck getting agreement even on OAR, Let alone discussing Pan & Scam or FOOLScreen, which do not apply to the new Widescreen TV environment...at least not yet. Few user truly understand this and even fewer (based on Contributions) understand that a typical 1.85 ( generally speaking) film is not going to P&S but FF(FS). Few also have enough material to be able to make any kind of comparison to determine P&S/FF. How many people really know how many different ARs there are for a classic film like Ben-Hur...it's a lot more than a few. When this was discussed way back when in the rules discussions, my positiob was simply that this was an area that was far beyond the expertise of most users, discussions such as this only confirm that belief, as does the website that tracer supplied, as wonderful as I think it is. One has to understand the history of each individual film regarding its filming, projection, theaters...everything. Just, for example, the film in question A.I. it's trailers, or least a number of them were projected in 2.35, eyt the film as I recall was projected in 1.85, or at least in the Theater that i consider to be my referencs theater in this area. This is a debate which will continue as long as there are movies. Good luck, Jim(s) Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

| Posted: | | | | Determining OAR can be tricky but luckily we don't have to profile that. Sometimes it's not easy to tell when even the director and DOP disagree about the proper aspect ratio... And sometimes this will change over time, as with some Kubrick films because they were shot before widescreen tv sets were in general use and therefore primed for 4:3, but now you'll get a 16:9 home version instead. Disney has also been inconsistent with some of their titles, now prefering widescreen over 4:3 even though it shows less of the original artwork. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

| Posted: | | | | General rule without measuring anything: open it on your computer (or a wdiscreen TV with 0 overscan). If it plays in a widescreen window with no bars, it's 1.78. If there are thin bars, it's 1.85. If there are thick bars, it's 2.35. If there are bars on the sides, it's 1.66. Measuring can get you the exact ratio, but that will be close. |

I'm actually a tad disappointed as this means he was able to get bad data into 5 out of 6 profiles. Gadgeteer measured the actual image and submitted that data. What did widescreen do? At least I know we still have some good voters here in R1 land. Thanks guys. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. At least I know we still have some good voters here in R1 land. Thanks guys. I'm disappointed as well, but it looks like 2 of those are full-screen profiles so hopefully they weren't part of this type of update. In that case, he only has 3 to correct to 1.78:1. | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | Somebody explain to me why we have users who feel possessed to make changes to copies that they do NOT own and i don't really care what area we are talking about. This kind of behavior on the part of undoubtedly well0meaning is going to take YEARS to fix. This is unbelievable. I even question the quality of R1 voters when they are allowing users to get away with this outrageous behavior. I find myself appalled and wishing my library was not in storage, the I would demonstrate VERY GRAPHICALLY just how misguided this plan which was spawned by on e user and has now expanded beyond even his ideas really is, the damage being done is simply unbelievable and makes us no better perhaps even worse than....,<shakes my head in utter disbelief>. I will continue to vote NO to this behavior by any and ALL users who engage in it. I am shocked, Terry. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

All I would put it my notes was something like, "Changed aspect ratio, verified by my eyes and powerdvd. 1.85 leaves small bars on powerdvd, 1.78 does not, and this disc did not". So far all have been approved. This got a bit lost in the heat of the discussion... For me your submissions were fine, as you checked them in the computer rather than the TV. That is assuming you used PowerDVD in a windowed and not maximized state... Quoting tweeter: Quote: I'm impressed. The most i own of any one title is four different versions of Serenity. If I may be so bold, I am simply assuming that you don't actually own all these different versions. So why do you feel the urge to update profiles were you can't verify the changes? - And I am not talking about cast and crew data here. Different aspect ratios for different releases of the same movie isn't unheard of, especially with releases from different locations and different release years. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

But since he contributed the same UPC on the same day twice, I can only assume that these are different localities, otherwise the second contribution would have overwritten the first one. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

Skip BTW wanted to comment on this, Skip, But as Ken has stated before ( june 15th 2009)., he said quote: " As previously stated, contributions to profiles you do not own are not violations of contribution rules." | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Ken's comment dealt specifically with Cast and Crew data, not you trying to change global video data that you have absoluteluy no way to verify as correct. At least those making global changes to cast and crew are doing so base upon one set of Actual data, they are making a horrible assumption and one which I will NEVER support, but at least they have some basis in reality, changing video data globally based on a single release is just completely insane. What's next changing global SRP based on a Region 1 US release, forget the Pound or the Franc, the Yen or whatever....yeah right. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. But how can you change the aspect ratio without having the DVD? How would you know what's really on the DVD? This really doesn't make sense to me. Dirk | | | Last edited: by TheDarkKnight |

| Posted: | | | | Because Ken said that he could make changes to what he does not own, even IF you can't prove it. It's was a dumb comment by Ken (sorry Ken, I call it like I see it) and one which we will all live to regret, and also one which I will NEVER support, there just is no way. There are too many variations.
Right now, we have users trying to make changes to Profiles based on another Profile which had data which was accepted, they are not asking basic questions like does this data really follow the Rules, nope but its been accepted for another Profile so lets bring it to this one.
Today i have seen a user cloning Additional voices which are not part of the cast but part of the Sound Department, but they were accepted in another profile and another user cloning (uncredited) data just because it was accepted and he doesn't even bother to provide documentation. The laziness of users here is getting ridiculous and is destroying what was the best DVD database in the world, we are quickly becoming a third rate database that has all the reliability of IMDb simply because people are allowewed to submit crap, and voters are not watching and asking questions that they need to ask.
