| Posted: | | | | Quoting DJ Doena: Quote: I've been using Windows 8 on my private PC since January. I took advantage of the limited-time €29 upgrade offer.
As a software developer I just need to know what's out there and what's coming next.
I can use Windows 8 and don't have that many problems with it.
But for me, the start screen is totally pointless. The only App I've ever installed is Skype and I threw that off my computer realizing that the Skype App is not able to share your screen with another Skyper. So I installed Skype for Desktop again.
I switch from Start Screen to Desktop instantly after boot and never see the Start Screen agin.
My most used programs are all pinned to the taskbar anyway. For Micorsoft's standard programs I've known the name of the .exe by heart for more than a decade (luckily they rarely if ever change).
I just press WIN+R and type: calc notepad mspaint cmd winword excel powerpnt msaccess charmap
If I want to start any other program I press WIN+Q and search there for it.
It's incredibly more faster than scrolling to an endless row of panels.
But to be fair, I already did most of this in Win 7, there you press WIN instead of WIN+Q and start typing.
Then again, I've been growing up with a DOS shell. In the end only true mouse pushers can answer if this screen is any good.
Whart I really, really hate is this (and sadly, this was already changed in Win 7): The search. Win XP had a simple search and a customizable advanced search where I could search for files that where changed between Christmas and New Year. But no, Microsoft had to copy Apple's Finder without keeping the old system for advanced users. I agree with every word in this post, except I'm not a developer, I'm system administrator, When I wan't to run a program I just press Windows key and start typing (works for both 7 & 8) and I also use Apps. I really really hate what they did for search in Win 7. I usually use Treesize to replace Windows' useless search. BTW Win+X is quite handy too. |

What kind of problebms you have had with those? I use for example Netflix app daily without any problems. Some earlier versions had video/audio sync problems, but they have been fixed a long time ago. Updating apps is really easy by the way. |

I just tried it and it does work. But for me it's abit counter-intuitive because you have to know that you can type now without seeing any kind of box to type into. With WIN+Q you have the search box at once. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

Link to how toHaving said that I just tried it and didn't seem to make much difference in the boot time. | | | IVS Registered: January 2, 2002 |

Regarding core: Ok, I guess I was using a pseudo-technical term based on a subjective impression. Forget it. Regarding the RT apps, I recall needing to install the Windows version of Acrobat reader in order for some other windows app to work properly, even though the RT version popped up - it wouldn't print, or something like that. It was a while ago. As far as Netflix, I seem to have trouble navigating the Instant Q in RT mode. Seems like I never get the complete list. And the RT app doesn't give me all the other options that I get when signed on to the web version. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Quote: I'll downgrade to Win7 Pro anyway! May I ask why? Sure! 1. I bought a new system including Win7 Pro. Win 8 "upgrade" would have been quite expensive 2. I do not see any advantage of those tiles on a desktop pc without touch screen with a miles long horizontal, scrollbar 3. I'm missing the start button 4. I do not see a significant better performance as Win 7 5. I refuse to use 3d party software (pay- or freeware) to get back the Win 7 functions You may ask: why are you using Win8 on your current machine? Answer: My current machine was originally delivered with Vista. I thought it can't go worse, and the upgrade to Win8 was very cheap! | | | Thorsten | | | Last edited: by kahless |

I'm at the moment in MS Windows 8 seminar and I can tell you that Win 8.1 does't bring old start menu back. I might also add that the source is very reliable. |
