an 8 on any cover is just a right rotated infinity symbol

A daring hypothesis.

It depends on the context if you ask me.

Upon looking at the overview for the just released Season 2 dvd, the Alex O'Laughlin and Hawaii Five-0 are definitely not both letter O's. So I would say that it's definitely Hawaii Five-(number) 0.
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

Agreed, but the rules say to take it from the front cover, not the overview. So it all depends on how rigidly you wish to interpret the rules. Personally I'm fine with Five-0 (number) for the new series.

While this is true, as I said earlier in this thread, the rules don't prohibit you double checking when there is a question as to what the letter/number/symbol is.

There is nothing in the rules that explicitly forbids it, but neither is there anything in the rules that indicate that it is allowed.

If you are looking at the front cover... and can't be completely sure what a character is that you are looking at... what else would you suggest? It makes sense to me to look elsewhere on the cover to see what it may be. If that is no help... I would see if the studio's website is of any help.

This to me sounds like a better option than just guessing what the character on the front cover is.

Neither is there anything in the rules indicating we can enter anything from a Blu-ray cover/case.  For example, the rule for Overviews says, "Copy the overview from the back of the DVD case exactly as written..."  There is nothing to indicate we have to copy the overview from the back of the Blu-ray case exactly as written, so does that mean we can enter whatever we want or do we use a little common sense and apply the same rule?

For me, the same thing goes here.  I don't need a rule to tell me that, if I am having trouble deciding whether a character is the letter 'o' or the number zero, checking the back of the case is a better choice than guessing.

I didn't say you couldn't look elsewhere. I just pointed out that - like so many things - it depends on how rigidly you wish to interpret the rules. I'm all for using some common sense.

But then again, common sense is a can of worms. It means something to me, something else to you and still something else to a third person.

The way I see it the contributor is still following the rules rigidly. They went to the front cover first and foremost as the rules say you must. But the front cover brought up questions on whether it was an "O"  or a "0". ]

In such a case where the front cover don't give an answer such as this... what does the rules tell you to do? hmmm... they don't. So what do you do when the rules don't cover something? The best you can. Which some people may just guess. And some my look into it further. Neither solution is wrong going by the rules. The answer they come up with for the contribution may or may not be... but neither solution is wrong per rules.

But I do agree with you that it isn't an ideal thing. Unfortunately the rules can't cover every situation. That is just something we have to deal with.

Yeah, but the problem is - to me it's a letter. So should I look further or not.
Well, fortunately I don't have to, because I don't own the new series, so no problem. But if I did...

The way I handle such a thing... If I was convinced it was a letter... I would contribute it that way. But at the same time I would remain open to no votes that gives a reason that makes sense... such as the titles in another place of the case that is more clear. Such as in this case. On the front cover it is stylized and can see how it looks like a letter instead of a number.. but several other places on the cover... overview, credit block... what have you... they use the number. I would have to believe it is also a number on the front cover... just stylized where it may not look like it.
