I am not sure what your point is here as it doesn't seem to have anything to do with what I posted...which was that the rules, to me, were quite clear.

The rules may be quite clear to a number of people here who nevertheless argue with one another about what they mean, so I don't know why any of us having a clear understanding makes any difference.

---------------

If the title appears in multiple languages, use the title that matches the language of the locality and do not include an alternate title ( for instance in another language).

seriously can I get an explanation of what this really means. appears in multiple languages. Where? alternate title. Does this mean original title, because it would be in another language.

anywhere on the cover? there are 3 sections to a cover: Front, Spine, Back. I've got box sets that have differnet so-called titles on front & spine. Or the spine will have one thing and the front is a list of the movies included. It can get confusing which to use. Like Alien - Definitive Collection. (1st 3 Alien films). Nowhere on the cover does it read that.

My point is the rules can be confusing, expecially to new members. They read like stereo instructions (Beetlejuice). I've read them at least a hundred times and some of the rules I still don't know what they want. So they are clear to you how about explaining each one in basic terms, for those of use that are not that fortunate.

You got that one right.  Thankfully the people here are willing to help if the new people are willing to learn.

plus top & bottom  I have several boxset which have for example UPC and Rating printed on the bottom and if I remember correctly at least one that have title only on top. And I won't even go to custom cases "this-and-that head" box etc. where we can only define bottom.

that's right, I also have a box set that has it on the top. Forgot about that one. None on the bottom yet.

I never said that they couldn't be confusing, only that these rules, for the title, were quite clear to me.

I try, as do others, but, as often happens, when someone doesn't agree with the interpretation, they simply argue about it.  In this case, we had Gerri, one of the company owners explain it, and we have a user say he doesn't care what Ken or Gerri say.  It is, almost, enough to make a person wonder why they bother...but I will try.

The way I read the title rules, which was confirmed as correct by Gerri three years ago, is as follows:
Take the title from the front cover, with one exception...if the title appears in multiple languages, anywhere on the cover, use the one that matches the locality instead, placing the title from the cover into the Original Title field.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I always thought the whole point of this rule was to make Profiler a little friendlier for our non-region 1 users.  This rule will almost never come into affect here in region 1, and there has traditionally been a lot of grumbling that Profiler was unfairly skewed towards region 1 customers.  I think the idea that not everyone spoke English as their first language (if at all) carried a lot of weight in this argument.

That must be frustrating when they argue like that.

I am new as you know.  I have questioned interpretation, but questioning and finding out why is a lot different than arguing.  It is like you said you wonder why they bother.  Any new user need to look at it from the perpective that they need to learn the tool, community and submission rules.  They may have feedback that will improve things for the future, but if the rules are not followed it leads to data quality issues that hurt everyone using profiler.  One of the most imprtant things about data quality is to stay consistant.

Sorry to say I wasn't arguing. May have been a little condescending on my part. You will know when I really argue, I'll probably be banned for language.

For the record, I was speaking in general terms and my comment wasn't directed at you.  Sorry if I gave that impression.

And just for another record.

When I read Martian's post I thought it was clear he was being general and not pointing at anyone at all.  Which is why I responed to his in general terms.
