Why doesn't it work in reverse. Like for Evan, the V and A seem to invading each others space. Think I just answered my own question though, probably due to the A being lower case in these names, and both upper case in the others.

You are correct with your own answer and sometimes people will do what is called kerning...removing optical space between 2 letters such as V and A which will then be overlapped when the vertical straight line is drawn. I do this all the time in desktop publishing. Edit: I should have mentioned that some programs have automatic kerning.
