As far as I'm concerned, the fact that it is a stage name takes precedence, and therefore, it all goes in the first name field.

I can't agree with this.  If we treat this name as a stage name, and enter it all into the first name field, then we have to do that with every single stage name regardless of how it looks.  That means 'John Wayne/ / '...'Tom Cruise/ / '...'Nicholas Cage/ / '...'Brad Pitt/ / '...is that what we really want?  I sure don't.

ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!!

I'm with those who see why a title moves everything to the first name field. Sir Elton John combines a stage name and a title. Would it all go in the first name field?

Well, I don't think it means that at all.

If he were commonly credited as "Toru Tanaka", then I would treat it the same as John Wayne and company, e.g., a regular name - "Toru//Tanaka".

"Professor" in this case is not to identify that he is an actual academic "professor", therefore, it is not a title, it is part of the stage name that he has adopted.

If we treat 'Elton John' as a regular name, meaning 'Elton/ /John', then we should treat 'Sir Elton John' the same way, meaning 'Sir Elton/ /John'.  The addition of the title shouldn't change anything.

I have to agree with Martian on this.

I personally think if a stage name looks like it could be a real name it should be parsed as a real name.

Well, I don't think it means that at all.

You said, "the fact that it is a stage name takes precedence, and therefore, it all goes in the first name field."  As far as I'm concerned, if that is your stance, then that stance should apply to all stage names, not just some of them.

Either we treat all stage names, that look like real names, as real names or we treat them all as stage names.  We should not be treating some one way, and others a different way.

I'm not sure if you're referring to me, but, no, I don't agree with that.

"Sir Alec Guinness" would be "Sir Alec//Guiness", provided that was his common name, otherwise it would be "Alec//Guiness [Sir Alec Guiness].

I've not checked all names, but I think for example "Nicholas Cage" changed his name to this, so it's now actually his name and not just a stage name.

For example "The Rock" is a stage name as his actual name is Dwayne Johnson.

So I think there is a difference and that's why handle it different.

No, we don't do this today, and I am not advocating any change in treating names that look like regular names any differently than we do now.

See my further explanation in the post you quoted, that I apparently edited after you wrote this.

I agree.  But "Professor Toru Tanaka" doesn't look like a real name. "Toru Tanaka" does, but that's not the credit.

Learning everyday something new.

But really: basic stuff like this needs to find it's way into the rules, instead of being buried somewhere deep down in the forums. How can the community be supposed to know about these things?

Absolutely agree that such things should be added in the database.    >Hopefully looking at Ken and Gerri<

I think there's just one way to have it easier until not added to the rules. I think we should start a thread with these "rules" based on the statements of Ken and Gerri. Perhaps with a short explanation the quoted statement and a link to thread it was discussed.

His real name is Nicolas Coppola, as in the son of Frank Coppola.

Sorry Hal... but just looking at the name... it looks like it could be to me.  I have no way of knowing if it is just something he tacked on... if he is a professor of any kind... or if it is an honorary title.

Agreed.  The addition of 'Professor' doesn't change anything for me.

That's a good point.  Sometimes information that you glean in these threads slants your view from what it would be if you just saw this with no other knowledge.

I concede that given no other information, I'd parse it "Professor Toru//Tanaka" and probably would not research further.  However, if someone did research and provide the information here, I'd tend to support "Professor Toru Tanaka//".
