| Posted: | | | | I HIGHLY ADVISE avoiding "Digital Copy" at all costs. This stuff installs applications without your consent and then runs them all the time, sometimes even hiding them as "rootkits," which can include disabling your drive from playing DVD's. While not all DVD's do this, the fact that they can do it and make it completely hidden to you as a user is reason enough to avoid this garbage like the plague.
ALWAYS turn operating system "autorun" features off, and NEVER open your DVD drive by double clicking on the drive letter; ALWAYS do a right click then "Open."
You can make a "digital copy" with ANY dvd by using Slysoft's AnyDVD in combination with CloneDVDMobile.
"Digital Copy" needs to die and that can only be accomplished if users don't support it. With the two applications I listed above, there is no reason whatsoever for "Digital Copy".
SlySoft's AnyDVD currently supports most Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, and they will eventually release a version of CloneDVDMobile which supports HD. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

| Posted: | | | | I honestly don't see wehy Digital Copy needs to die. I don't use it myself and could just as well rip the movie itself (although Blu-ray software for OS X is close to non existent) but I can see how "regular consumers" (read: nobody from this forum) may find it helpful to have the file ready to copy for use on their iPod or whatever, without the need to rip.
Of course, any applicaiton installation or rootkit implementation while doing the copy MUST DIE. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. Registered: May 29, 2000 (at InterVocative) |

The fact that you're making this statement in sarcasm seriously blows my mind. You are seriously OK with rootkits being installed on your system without your knowledge? I'm often paranoid that companies are finding ways to brainwash people into being more accepting of their loss of fair use rights and things like spyware and rootkits, and when I see statements such as yours I often worry if perhaps I'm right. Just my opinion. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

Just my opinion. I didn't see his statement as sarcasm...but that might be because I have known Achim on these forums for quite some time. I took his comment to mean, digital copies don't need to die, but the practice of installing rootkits does. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. BTW, rootkits and other malware on DVDs is NOT limited to Digital Copy DVDs, on the contrary. So while I dislike the Digital Copy stuff, I see no reason to vent against it. | | | Matthias | | | Last edited: by goodguy |

Yes, you and goodguy understood me right. capital letters were not meant for sarcasm but emphasis. Maybe should have choses bold or italics instead. Sorry for the confusion Grendell. I do indeed in no shape or form agree with rootkits etc., I simply thinkn that Digital Copies without those should be helpful to computer-illiterate people. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. Like others I couldn't see any sarcasm. (and which Achim has himself confirmed.) I think this is just an example of differing usage of English across different cultures. Now for real sarcasm listen to some brits interviewing our politicians.. | | | Paul |

I tried this once and was seriously annoyed back onto my admin account. You can't really try it on a running system. I once converted my existing account from admin to user and it became a nightmare, mainly because all files were labeled to be owned by the admin and therefore not accessible by the user. Some programs were trouble to run. It's best to do this on a fresh install or at least have the admin copy all files into the My Documents of the newly created user account. Converting an account is terrible. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. Registered: May 29, 2000 (at InterVocative) |

I tried this once and was seriously annoyed back onto my admin account. There is absolutely no problem with this. I administrate environment of +5000 workstations/+30000 users where no one runs their workstation as an administrator. Key thing is a correctly set ACL's, but in a home environment using "run as.." is the easiest solution. |

Converting an account is terrible. Nope, just set the ACLs correctly |
