It could represent 77 or 'M'. But it could just as well be ab 8 bit boolean array representing 8 separate settings. Or it could be part of an image file. Or...

And 'M' could stand for "Medium" or ""Male" or "Mature Audience" or "Manual Profile"...   
So, information can vary a lot with the context, even if the data is always the same ("01001101") !
