hal9g, i get no satisfaction of contributing, its just a "good neighbour" practice that have to be done in a user built database. I could easily stop doing so, as even now i add most DVD's i buy to the database as new profiles. But i dont feel comfortable to stop doing so, when the only ones complaining are the ones that would not be effected  by such desision. So unless someone from the finnish locality or staff members say its not ok, i will continue to contribute in the belief that the data i add will be usefull to other finnish users.

No, I'm not missing your point. Your point is that you can't be bothered. Fine, load your local DB with garbage but leave the online database alone by NOT contributing.

Are you saying that i should stop contributing profiles that are acceptable to the database by the screeners?

In a word...YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you can't be bothered with verification STOP

That's BS IMHO.

"Many 'good' profiles" far outweigh "few 'perfect' profiles and a lot of not existing profiles", especially in a location that can't be compared to the user base of the US.

Keep on contributing, I would say. If by accident some errors are there, eventualy someone will pick up on those and adjust the profile. (As long as you keep away from the IMDB infested profiles ). I think you are long enough arround here and contributed profiles to know what to contribute and what not to the online

by the way you're not alone, just found this coontribution note:
Quote:
Add Cast and crew taken from the US version already in DB
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

If whispering's Finnish contributions didn't affect the Credit Lookup Tool we all are supposed to use to determing common names, there wouldn't be much of a problem with what whispering is doing.  But the problem is that all contributions regardless of region/locality DO impact on the CLT.  It isn't really fair for someone to contribute an unverified cast/crew list and then make someone else do the research to correct any possible errors.  Leaving it up to voting users to catch any errors won't work, either, since only those who have that region/locality DVD would vote on it -- not the larger universe of people who are affected by that one contribution.

Copying from other profiles is a time saver, but only because you don't have to re-enter each and every credit manually.  And I believe Ken has stated that it is OK to do this, however, I do not believe he meant it's OK to do it blindly and not check those entries before submitting them.

Ditto.

exactly... which is why I agree with the others that all the cast/crew must be verified.

I agree totally with you. It's easy for American users to find new profiles as they are many to contribute. I already said that in small countries (or countries where not so many people speak english), contributions for new profiles are rare, and it's a pity for the success of dvdprofiler. If a new user doesn't find in the database a profile of his DVDs, he will probably not buy the product. If he finds a profile where there is John Smith Jr. instead of John Smith, Jr.  , I'm not sure he will be so upset...

That's why I also found sad to stop contributing,  but I gave up in front of M.C.R.S.

Yet another user who prefers bad data in the online, whilst complaining at the same time about the fact that the cast crew don't link properly. They won't link all the time people keep submitting incorrect data.

Everytime incorrect or at least unvarified data is entered it messes up the CLT which leads to people having to select the incorrect name in the first place.

In my local database, cast and crew link properly. But of course this is thanks to the fact that I do not follow rules, and don't contribute...

If you had bothered to even try to follow the rules - you would get correct links in the online as well! It's a bit more tedious than just deciding for yourself that John Blow is the same person as Joe Blow, but the end result is a correct and one-of-a-kind online database for the benefit of everyone!

Not contributing, and consistently badmouthing the online community (like you do) will not result in a more accurate database!

Stop nagging, you silly man!

That surfeur is your prerogative, not to contribute, thus not instilling more bad data into the online, but as Berak has pointed out if everybody ensured the data that they are submitting was accurate that would be to the benefit of the WHOLE community.

Take it how you wish, but there it is:

The new copy/paste functionality is designed for ease of editing, and to support copying actors between DVDs.

The IMDB data is owned by the IMDB, so I have to ask that any discussions about importing from the IMDB occur elsewhere.  As always, anything contributed to the online database should come directly from the source, and not from a separate third party database.

I hope everyone understands the position we are in on this, and helps us to avoid any legal issues.

I'm sorry to say this, but just because i'm the one saying it out loud, doesnt mean others arent doing it. I would make a rough estimate that from the profiles ive commed across the majority had cast/crew lists copied from another profile without being verified. So if you're using CLT in the belief that all profiles in the database have verified cast and crew, you're wrong. Though the profiles ive commed across probably make up 0,2% of the whole DB.

But Whispering, this is what we are saying, The Ken has given permission to copy profiles from already submitted DVD's but as others believe the same as I do, verify the data you are submitting back to the online DB, because if the profile you are copying is wrong You are just adding a further wrong profile. How long does it take to watch the credits and compare with your copied profile? nowhere near the same amount of time it takes to do from scratch.

Just because user x has put in their notes that they have copied profile "Y" doesn't mean to say they have not verified them. As I have said earlier I too have copied other localities profiles, verified them and where necessary made changes and put the fact in my contribution notes, but if I have not had to make changes I have just stated that I have copied them. Most UK R2 user's know that I don't do crew credits as it's not data I am interested in, so I have a tendancy not to copy that data, but I am usually very thorough with cast data.

As surfeur has said earlier he copies other submissions, changes to link his data, BUT he doesn't resubmit his data because as he stated he won't follow the rules as set out by the rest of the community.
