So for Star Trek and the likes I would (and do) use

721: Encounter at Farpoint
102: The naked now

just out of curiosity, is this the way star trek episodes (and probably others) should be numbered? by number, i thought one meant by season order, not the number assigned in the end credits, or wherever (simply uninformed) that longer numbers come from.

That's what use in my own db, but have left off the episode number on smaller set such as mini-series  and documentaries. But what ever they come up with is okay with me. Its small potatoes.

Well,, it's how they are numbered in the menu, the booklet and on every Star Trek website I've ever seen...

Just throwing in my own two cents (hadn't done so in the original post):

I personally prefer "1. Episode Name" as used in Episode Lists. However, I would also be cool with using no episode numbers at all, because of previously stated arguments.

Whichever way we go, standardization would be good. Perhaps it could eventually be listed in the rules, too? Otherwise people who haven't read the arguements on the forums totally miss out on this.

Do you even bother to read what people post?  I said Extend the standard to the dividers and be done with it.  What didn't you understand about that statement?

Just incapable of a civil conversation, aren't you John?

You've got a lot of gall complaining about somebody not being civil, mister.  I did address the issue and you blew right on by suggesting I was trying to say this was a settled issue.  I didn't say any such thing.  You acted as if my point was worthless, and why didn't I just go away.  Don't even talk to me about being civil.  You wouldn't know civil if it ran up and bit you in the ass!

I apologize to everybody but you, now, for not being civil, but I'm mad.

Playing devil's advocate here, but aren't they numbered like that so you can tell what season they're from? We wouldn't need that for our purposes, as each episode would be contained within the season's profile. Therefore all we would need is: 1. Encounter at Farpoint; 2. The Naked Now etc. We already know they're in season 1, so don't need the "10" adding to the front.

Also, on a more general note, do we really need dividers that say "1. Episode 1", "2. Episode 2" etc? Surely we only need the number if the episode has a title?

Well, Hal, he is certainly NOT alone in that department. I have said this to YOU numerous times, and you ignore it so why should John lend any credence to what you say. Yopu may take this a yet another request.

I seems to me the simplest method would best. That way if somebody prefers another method they can change theirs.
1. episode
2. episode
3. episode

or left blank. both being acceptable

I also thing at times we are getting so many overly complicated regulations that maybe why some people don't contribute or error in in their contribution.

I know that on some films, example Asian films, I would not think of trying to do the cast or crew profiles. Also some of the modern films I just what studios should be added. So if I can find an example I just leace that field blank.

On a slightly different track, is it allowed to place cast that appears in all episodes above the dividers, to avoid repetition?

Also, I note that when the individual discs list all the episode details, that is than cumulated on the box. Unreadable and repetitious surely? Why does the rule not to copy "crew" on the box not also hold for "cast"?

I may have missed some threads in the past months confusion, so I apologize if these questions have been asked before. It's not that a question has not been answered before, usually it has been answered numerous times, and each case differently.

I searched for this too, and couldn't find anywhere where a decision had been made, although I found plenty of discussions about it!!
I've also got profiles that do it both ways, so I would say if you're absolutely sure they're in all the episodes then there's no reason you can't have them above dividers. But that doesn't mean you have to if you don't want to. You're just as welcome to list them under each episode too.

It has not been put in the rules yet... but as you see in THIS thread... it is close but most people prefer it to be all cast under each divider... I have done a lot of series so already... and I found that it can get very complicated to do main cast above the dividers.

I agree, even if you do episodes by disc, much less the whole season in one list.

And then, just to complicate things further, you have anime collections where I'm seeing dividers for Japanese cast and English cast.  So if you were to also have dividers for episodes, would you have:
    1. Episode
          English cast
              Joe schmoe etc
          Japanese cast
              Takashi Schmoe etc

Seems - I don't know - bulky.
I'm just curious about anyone else's take on this as I have alot of anime, and was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the prospect of reordering things.
Or does no one care so much about anime?

I suppose there's really only two options, the one above and this one:

English Cast
    1. Episode
          Joe schmoe etc
    2. Episode
          Joe schmoe etc
Japanese cast
    1. Episode
          Takashi Schmoe etc
    2. Episode
          Takashi Schmoe etc

The top way, for a 10 episode series, you'd end up with 30 dividers (1 for each episode, and 10 each for english cast and japanese cast). The second way you'd end up with 22 dividers (1 each for each cast list and 2 for each of the 10 episodes).
So the second way would mean less lines, but would it look better?

northbloke, I'm kind of inclined to do it as you described.  As I tend to be primarily more interested in the Japanese cast, your way allows me to scroll down to the Japanese section and not have to keep jumping past the English section for each episode.  So, I don't know which looks better, but the second method seems more functional to me.  Thanks for the input.

Hell, I'm a bit of a purist - stick the Japanese cast at the top where they belong!
Nobody should be listening to the dubbed versions anyway!

LOL.  I noticed that I put the English first in my example after I posted it and thought "That aint right - but no one will notice."  Don't worry, I planned on putting the Japanese first.
