Over time once the novelty wears off, people will start voting less and less with the exception of voting negative.

On some other systems that use a reputation system, I see users going on voting positive more than negative.
Well, of course that also depends on behaviors

It would be very interesting for me to see an (anonymized) statistic of the total voting behavior, in order to see the relation of good and bad votes overall! It would be interesting as well, if there is a kind of relationship between the voters (e.g voter A votes 10x good for voter B who in return votes 10x good for voter A...) .

I was wondering can only users with a full dvdprofiler rate members?

Yes. From the first post:

- Rating posts is open to all paid user accounts, limited to 5 positive, 3 negative per day.

So far, we've had a positive:negative ratio of about 9:1.

This same idea can be applied to the rules as well.  There is a certain group here who has done their level best to impose their will on the rest rules wise.  The rules are here, first and foremost, to serve the online database.  NOT to satisfy anybody's particular preferences or foibles.  There have been entirely too many changes made of late that have nothing to do with anything but forcing personal preference of a small minority on the majority via the online database rules.

Ah, John is back, and he hasn't changes his style (accusations, generalizations etc.).

Could you please elaborate

Who belongs to this ominous "minority" ?
Which rules you are talking about ?
How do you deduce the "fact" that the majority was overruled (have there been polls) ?

As long as you don't answer the questions, I assume all you want to do is stir up trouble, which the new reputation system hopefully will deal with easily.

I stated my opinions based on observations over the last two months.  I purposedly did NOT name names because to do so would only create more arguments.  Anybody who is honest with themselves knows who I'm referring to anyway, and to say otherwise is disingenuous.

By the way, I asked everybody to keep an open mind, and your reply is just the sort of thing I was referring to -- you are castigating me for expressing my opinion.  If you don't agree, that's your perogative, but don't put the onus on me for having different perceptions than you do.

That is not how the normalization process works.  In general, once you attain a star, you won't lose it through normalization quickly.  Getting the next star is harder and takes longer, but it's not impossible.  When tuned correctly, 4 star members will be rare, but will eventually get there.

Hello Rifter,
I dare to anwer you as somebody who has never been ivolved in the conflict between you and other users at any time. And yes, I am really open minded! I think we have to deal with very different point of views. You, Rifter fight against any kind of paternalism, what other users may interprete as anarchism. This may be the result of different history and experiences concerning the "new" and the "old" world.
So what can we do to stop to talk at cross-purposes? IMHO we should consider this rating system as a chance to "reboot" our behaviour and start to respect eachother. This means somebody has to start by "swallowing" a possible insult and shake hands instead of starting a verbal ravage. What do you think about this? We all should be aware that we share a very wonderful hobby. DVD lovers are the good ones

My God... Is there anything you haven't thought of? Except that new-comers will believe what the four-star people says over what you say, because you have no stars?

A <nobr> tag is an HTML tag to instruct the browser to not allow any line breaks/wrapping with spaces.  As a result, the left column with the user alias would be expanded just enough to allow the user name to fit.  Same thing would happen if the spaces were replaced with &nbsp; (non-breaking space).

He's referring to the nobreak command as his name is now splitted in two thanks to the star he gained.

One thing that may encourage people to vote on other posts is to take into consideration how many votes they have given in their overall reputation score.  Say, if someone casts x number of votes, it counts as one positive vote towards their reputation.
