I'm not sure there is anything to "get over". Most of the posts simply said that if you don't use Twitter you are not alone. I've certainly adapted to change, but neither Twitter nor Facebook appeal to me. But then I don't like to be "connected" all the time - shock, horror, I sometimes even turn my phone off (or at least to silent). Truely, I have friends that are horrified when we are out to dinner and I turn off my phone!

I don't begrudge Ken (or anyone else) using Twitter, after all it's his company, he can do what he likes. But he should know that anything he Tweets won't be seen by many/some/a few of his users (not that I imagine he will only post news via Twitter, anyway).

No, most posts agreed with Patheon whose posting was in the vein of "Cars? Who needs this newfangled stuff? They're pointless. Why ride a car if you have a horse and buggy anyway?"

And maybe it's because I see it as just as pointless (ok, maybe just way overrated,) but I saw Patheon's post as much of "Who needs a 2013 model sports car when a the 2009 model sedan still runs just fine and gets you to the same place?"

I don't use Twitter and still manage to learn everything important that others know. There were other ways to communicate before Twitter. They all still exist; they all still work just fine, and I don't recall before it was created hearing any complaints like, "I wish I didn't have to go to each celebrity's website to find out what they are up to. I want to be able to know about all of them through a single website."

Twitter gives very little more than any other type of communication except that its luck of the draw becoming popular (there are several other sites like it) and centralized more people. While there are people who tweet more newsworthy stuff, it's still filled with "I am standing in line and store. I am so bored." and "I just saw a Johnny Depp lookalike in the neighboring town, I wonder if the real Johnny Depp will be making a movie in my town soon. I hope he will let me star in it! Stay tuned so that I can tell you when we start filming!" then yea.... Pantheon's perspective (though overly-embellished, imo) has validity.

For one, Google is shutting down iGoogle at the end of 2013. iGoogle was a great place to have one's RSS feeds all in one place (without a need for a RSS feed reader).

So Twitter is a decent replacement for this.

People who are still reading actual newspapers say the same thing about the internet...

And there will be ways after Twitter. I never said it was the golden egg.

Isn't that almost always the case? Microsoft wouldn't be this big today if they hadn't struck that MS-DOS deal with IBM 30 years ago.

So what? Who reads that? How many followers do these people have?

Just because people go on and on and on about the most vain topics never made the telephone pointless. "Hang up." "No you hang up." "No, no, you hang up first." ...

I only responded because your comment sounded rather snide, as if you took it personally that someone insulted Twitter. I thought Pantheon's was extreme, but I thought your response was as well. But since yours was a direct rebuttal, I was trying to merely level the playing field.

A lot of people love Twitter and act as if they can't live without it. A lot of people think it's stupid and wish it would die a painful death. Oh well. Life goes on, and we all manage to survive no matter which side that we are on

Knowing this community as we both do, you might agree that everything posted on Twitter will likely end up getting repeated in the forum anyway

I just have an avertion against the "I don't have a use for it so it must be useless for everyone" attitude which is shining through here:

Twitter is a recent communication tool.

And like anything invented after someone is a child, it meets reactionary resistance.

I beg to differ.

Not every invention is an improvement or makes sense in the long run. Being skeptic about some things or not supporting them does not mean one is against every new thing.

I grew up with LPs, MCs & VHS, but I never hesitated to go to CDs, DVDs or lately Blu-rays.
Online distribution on the other side will be a step that I'm not gonna take, I buy physical media, or none. Not because I'm getting older, because IMHO there are only a few pros and a ton of serious cons. (Neccessary backup space, fear of hardware failure, total control over what I watch and when and how often, the lowered bitrate and so on...)

Social networks or Twitter can be useful for some, I see that, but personally I avoid them because I don't need them and, again,  the pros don't outweight the cons (of course only IMHO). But I'm not against them.

Now, wait a damned minute!! I never said anything about wanting Twitter to die a death or go away. I also never said anything about preferring older methods of communication.

I stated an opinion. I think Twitter is inane. Maybe I should have explained why I feel that way?

I like to keep in touch with friends, family, news etc and I do not feel that anything important can be said in 140 characters (or whatever the limit is).
What pertinent information can be imparted within that restriction? Once again, an opinion. I like my news/information with more depth.

However, as some people have shown here, they use this service to provide news updates. Good for them. I do not begrudge the use of this site to anyone who gets something out of it.
I personally, do not have a use for it and it has nothing to do with wanting the world to stay the same (how snide and judgemental was that!).

I use facebook to keep in touch with my friends around the world - it allows communication at varying degrees of depth, as well as access to other information. I find this useful.
I know many other people who hate facebook.

A couple of people here have implied that I am a fossil you doesn't support advancement. I take object to that.

I wonder how many people who use Profiler have gone over to Blu-ray? And, from there to 3D blu-ray? Not many, I would think.
I have.
So, just because I don't like Twitter don't label me as antiquated. I'm happy with eReaders over books, cars over bicycles and acceptance over prejudice. Please do not confuse an opinion on a subject as a definitive statement on other issues or an indication of motivation.

If you wanted to know why I hate Twitter you could have simply asked me, yes? To make assumptions on why I don't like it is just as bad as me making a blanket statement without deeper explanation.

Actually, I think you are reading into things here. I do not see the attitude you are indicating. If anything I see a broader spectrum of users showing the alternate uses of Twitter.

I don't use Twitter as a means to communicate with friends. And I don'tknow anyone who does (but I'm sure they're out there).

But I do know that my youngest cousin is texting dozens of times a day. 160 characters per message. He probably would use Twitter the same way he uses his mobile (you can send private messages via Twitter, it doesn't have to be public).

As I showed on page one, for me Twitter is a means of a newsticker where I can customize the sources of the newsfeeds to my individual needs.

A headline and a link to a proper article. For that 140 characters are just about enough.

But when you write something like this:

Quote:

Twitter is the most inane, boring, totally pointless invention in the history of man

it implies that people who are actually using this invention seem to have nothing better to do with their time if they can waste it on this inane, boring and totally pointless tool.

To you maybe. To me, it simply is a statement of my opinion.

If I thought the people who use it are inane and boring I would have said so - although that would have been very rude.

I have used Twitter and, in the course of doing so, decided that it was inane and boring and totally pointless. This was a statement of opinion based on my experience with the tool.
I was bored. I found that the things I was reading were inane and therefore, I found it totally pointless.

Now, you may disagree with my opinion as you are quite right to do so; but I don't think it's particularly fair to nail me to a figurative cross for having that opinion.

Do not assume that I don't support modern advances based on one simple comment. You know nothing about me. But, as I stated, in retrospect I should have explained myself further to prevent just this sort of judgemental response.

I like Facebook.  To me it provides a great replacement for e-mail for keeping in touch with people.  I never check e-mail anymore because my inbox is clogged with spam.

I've never had a desire to try Twitter because it seems pointless, what with it being (as I understand it) just a few characters per update.  However there are lots of website services I've never had a desire to try because they don't sound like something that would be of use for me.  Glad for the people that like them tho.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

I am on facebook but not Twitter.. though I do read the twitter feeds of some celebrities I like... just for the fun of it.

And then even on facebook I tend to only play the games on there... don't really post messages much.

I don't do facebook but with twitter I use it to announce competitions and the likes for www.dvdcompare.net and use as a news feed from film sites. Anyone that tweets a lot of personal crap I just remove.
