It can be argued that multiple versions/formats are separate films.

That would be an argument totally unsupported by the rules so I assume that you're just trying to muddy the waters. Note that the rules make a clear distinction when referring to combos: "Sets containing the same film on multiple media types", whereas "The term "Box Set" is used to define any release that includes more than one film.". If combos are box sets, there would be no need for a special rule regarding how to treat them.

My computer can play a DVD but not a Blu-ray. 3D is another beast altogether.

And this of course is altogether irrelevant.

I know that box sets rules must apply irregardless of the format.

Except they never apply to a single film.

Ken needs to update the rules or clarify this issue because there is not a correct answer for these contributions.

I agree, at this point when it comes to 3D we have been working on community consensus.

I attempted to build a concensus in "Contribution Rules Committee" forum.  But every time we got to each stage of concensus people that did not want to agree with that concenus kept wanting to restart the process.

We had a discussion thread on what the profilling options could be
1) Opened a poll on those options
2) Because there were 6 options there was not a clear winner so a poll was opened on the top three
3) Based on that poll a poll was opened on the options for rule wording to send to Invelos

The rule wording has not been sent to Invelos yet based on that poll because at that time my wife went in the hospidtal.  In addition at the point of step 3 people involved in steps 1 and 2 were still arguing because they wanted options that did not turn out to be the consesus.  So it got very frustrating. Heck the option I wanted was not the concensus but I tried to keep the process going based on the concensus.

Well I wish you people would make you're minds up. I asked a similar question just a few weeks back in this thread , it's not exactly the same but is still blu-ray/dvd and got a different answer to what most of you are alluding to in this thread.

And if any of you actually bothered to read the rules rather then just pick up on pieces of them then you would notice that the very first line of the box set rule states:

"The term "Box Set" is used to define any release that includes more than one film."

From what I read in this topic there is only one film in this combo set. So this is not a box set.

Now ok, I apologize for my anger here but as a newer user I am really getting tired of re-submitting profiles of my collection because interpretations of the rules change with every post I read in these forums. I don't care what the rules are, I don't care which way they have to be, but for God's sake please stop changing things every other week as to what is the correct way.

How is this different from the answers you got the last time? I'm sorry for your frustration but f you seriously think that everyone will read the rules and answer you in exactly the same way you can forget it, it's never going to happen. We'll just have to live with our imperfect rules that don't cover every possible situation that can occur in real life as best as we can.

I see 3D as an unspoken extension of the combo rule.

I don't, because 3D is not a Media Type like Blu-ray and DVD, it's just a Video Format detail.

Well in that case the media type is still Blu-ray, which is a media type. So one less thing to worry about.

**** POST COMPILATION ERROR  [rant mode off] statement must be preceeded by [rant mode on] ****

But there is exceptions for child profiles in the box set rules for combo's that do allow optional profiles.  Also in the bonus film rules.  Optoinal profiles that the end use can decide whether to keep locally or not.  True box sets the child profiles are not supposed to be optional and the parent profile is pretty bare.

Your assumption is wrong.

It is the issue that has muddied that waters. I vote neutral on these types of situations because I don't believe there is a clear cut correct answer.

By the way I understand your frustration.

I have been in this community almost a year.  And it takes a lot of time to learn how the inconsistancies and clarifications issues in the rules are actually handled.  Because you only learn those by interracting with the community.  You are new to the community and you are doing that so just don't get too frustrated and it will get easier.  I can tell you from experience it will.

Why can't we just get black and white rules? What people do locally is up to them as usual, but we really need some rules that aren't ambiguous for the db. I really don't see the problem with clarifying the rules. True people may not agree with rule changes but there were always some rules and people had to abide by them.

Anything's better then different ways to do the same thing...

PS: I don't know where that poll is that has been mentioned but maybe one that runs a preferential round robin might get a clear winner.

The rules are updated, irregularly. And 3D is fairly new so give it some time. Maybe Invelos wants to study how we want to handle them first, before making decisions that will affect everyone, sometimes in unforseen ways.

True, but the main point here for having a separate disc id profile is because the combo contains both blu-ray and dvd, not because it has 3D/2D and the rules say you can submit a disc id profile for the dvd as optional.

I don't disagree with that, although I think the combo rule could be extended to optionally allow profiling secondary HD media as children without any harm done to the integrity of the database. But if you believe that you have made a correct contribution following the rules, by all means submit it. And likewise vote by it. Remember that negative votes are only opinions of other users such as yourself. Just as polls are just opinions of some users. In the end Invelos decides what goes into the database and they might decide to go against the votes. But since they don't possess intimate knowledge of every detail to judge consistently in every case, they are often reliant on the users. But as has been pointed out many times in the past, the online database should not be regarded as the final answer in every matter. It is rather the starting point for your own collection where you can make any modifications you wish locally. Accepting that will make things go down much more smoothly.

I would disagree, 3D is not new.  3D came out in 2010.  It took quite a while just to get the 3D flag put in, but people have been profiling these since 2010.

There have been lots of discussions for years, but no official clarifications.

Yes, there were a few titles released at the end of 2010 when even fewer people could play them. I think I will continue to call them new for a while yet. And knowing how slow things usually move around here, I wouldn't expect anything else. Whenever there is a new feature like BD-Live, it will take quite a while before it's added to the program. But as you say, people have managed to profile them anyway.

Well they really started in June of 2010, but not that many until 2011.  I was an early adopter to 3D getting my 3D TV and BD player in March of 2010...from that you can either you can assume that I am either brave, stupid, hopeful, or just a "new gadget" junkie

I bought heavily into HD DVD in 2007 so I have done my share.
