The front cover is what we have to go by per the title rules. The only time we are to go to the credit block (per the rules) is when there is a possessive on the front cover. Since there is no possessive on the front cover that rule don't apply.

The question was asked, What does the credit block say? and that was all I offered up, no opinion or suggestion, didn't quote any rule. Just answered a question.

Looking at the covers at amazon... The Beatles is not in possessive form on the cover... it don't say...

The Beatles'
Yellow Submarine

it just says...
The Beatles
Yellow Submarine

No different then any title that has an actor's name above a title (whether bigger or smaller then title). So going by that... the possessive rule has nothing to do with this title. So between going by what I see on the front cover and what I read in the rules... looks to me the correct title would just be Yellow Submarine.

Isn't this effectively a possessive? What does the credit block say?

Standard DVD - The Beatles' Yellow Submarine

BlueRay - no mention of the title, just The Beatles at the top.

I must admit, I thought you were offering an opinion because you answered the question, a second time, while quoting Pete's statement as to why it wasn't a possesive.

How is this not a possessive? It's sticking on the name of a person or group to credit them with creatorship or authorship.

It is not a possessive because it is not in the possessive form...

Arnold Schwarzenegger's is the possessive form
Sandra Bullock's is the possessive form
Goldie Hawn's is the possessive form....

just like The Beatles' would be the possessive form. but The Beatles is just stating the name of the band. Nothing what so ever showing it is the part of the title... no more then the ones I showed above.

I think we should check the credit block on all of those. Generally, a project won't be named for an actor, but will be named for a writer, director or author of original material. The Beatles are the latter in this case.

And the only time we use their names in the title is when it is in possessive form on the front cover.

Per rules the only time the credit block is checked is when the front cover has a possessive... in none of those cases... including Yellow Submarine... is there a possessive on the front cover... so per the rules it would be Yellow Submarine... no matter what the credit block says.

As I said... strictly going by the rules. As long as the rules are as such that will be the only opinion I would have on the subject (unless Ken himself clarifies otherwise).

It is not a possessive because there is no apostrophe...The Beatles' is a possessive, The Beatles is not.

That is an assumption on your part.  The rules give two examples of possessives, and in both cases, there is an apostraphe 's'.  I there isn't an apostrophe 's', or an apostrophe ater an 's', it isn't a possessive.

I only posted a 2nd time, bolding the credit block.showing that I answered for the credit block and he was talking about the front cover. To me it seemed he was pointing out I was wrong.

There is an exception for music titles in the rules. So the only relevant question is: Is it a music title?

Sorry about the possessive confusion, I misread the front cover as being possessive but it isn't.

I would certainly use music as a genre for this film, not sure if qualifies as "music title". I must admit, I'm not familiar with that section of the rules though.

If it were a possessive, it should technically be The Beatles’s, as The Beatles is an ‘it’ (singular) not a ‘them’ (plural).  Working for an organisation that’s just changed its name to one that sounds like a plural word, I’m red hot on this at the moment!

You Americans, with your laid-back grammar and spelling.
Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...

Well it was Geirger Bernard Shaw that hit the nail on the head by saying "England and America are two countries separated by a common language"

The exception is for "music and stage performance DVDs."  I don't think this qualifies as it is more of a musical and not a performance.
