Ironically, the OS's that Windows 8 is being designed to compete against, primarily handheld, can play media files right out of the gate without any nonsense.

Apple-OS can't.

What are you talking about ? Of course you can play media files with OS X.

Apple-OS can play Apple-files.

MPEG-2 works without aditional software on the current version of OS X. But, yeah, apparently previous versions weren't able to run MPEG-2 out of the box. I never noticed that before.

I've been running Windows 8 on my netbook for, what is it now, more than 6 months at least? It still has bugs but it works quite well for a beta but then I run it mostly with Classic Shell so it's not that different from Windows 7. And it runs DVD Profiler. A metro app version would be nice though.

I don't know how many times now I've read similar statements, which begs the obvious question of why the hell even bother?

Because I don't have Windows 7 on my netbook, only old XP. And Windows 8 is a free trial.
