Basically, an RCE DVD is coded for all reasons, but plays different material for each region. For region 1, it will take you to the movie. For any other region, it will take you to a looping video or static screen saying that it only plays in unmodified R1 players. This is ordinary DVD content, essentially set up as a trap.

Ok, I get it now. Verified on my own copy of Mr. Deeds (thanks Kathy!). Thanks for hanging in there until I got it ...

Mark, remember that the regions are encoded in the IFOs - a single byte (1 bit for each DVD region), which are readable even if the disc doesn't play. Does this fact change your comment at all?

No, doesn't change my comment at all!

As Ace said, RCE discs appear to be all region.  The region flags in the IFO are basically useless.  If you just look at the region byte, all RCE discs appear to be all region (well, 1-6 at any rate).  Yet they still only play in the intended region and not in the others.

The link that both Ace and I listed explains it all quite well.  Take two minutes to skim it and I think things will be a lot clearer.

I did read it, as I said before. But I obviously didn't understand it fully.

I get the concept of RCE, but there seem to be some companies that use it on single-RC discs. I own Underworld (RC1 to RC8), where DVD Decrypter asks me to manually pick a region. But the same "RCE screen" appears in DVD Decrypter also on the Star Trek Special Editions (Paramount), where the discs are coded to RC1 only, and where I can pick only this option anyway... What's the purpose there?

Do you get then a static "error" screen, instead of a more elaborate video loop? I'm asking because I can't seem to reproduce this, with any of my drives or players, so I'm curious. The only hint of RCE I've ever encountered is that "Pick Region" window in DVD Decrypter, while the behaviour afterwards is always the same, no matter what I pick. So I'm puzzled, because according to Decrypter by far not all discs with RCE are set to RC1 to RC6 (or RC8).

Is the RCE present but inactive on such discs, or is it a wrong analysis by DVD Decrypter? Or to rephrase my question: is there another freeware tool that can diagnose the use of RCE on DVDs more reliable?

RCE was really only effective in the early days of DVD when the first quick and dirty region hacks tried to fool the region coding by setting the player to accept all regions simultanously instead of letting the user select a specific region to play the disc. Once RCE came out, the hackers quickly adopted and rendered it obsolete overnight. Some advanced tools could probably look automatically for the video loop to detect RCE but I don't know if it's worth the effort for such a small number of titles...

Pretty much the same conclusion I came to many years ago when I fooled with this.  More effort could be done to find it.  But why?  It would be an enormous amount of work for very little return.

Plugin Sneak Preview

I have pre-beta version of the plugin "Profile Contribution Assistant For Invelos DVD Profiler" running standalone - DVDPca.

I have no idea whether it will even work on non-Region 1 drives, or what the operating system issue are. So give it a shot. A bunch of the menus don't work because it is not running inside DVDP, but I wanted to give you an idea of what I was thinking.

Screen Shot.

Still working on:

- Making it run as a plugin
- Adding BD support
- GUI enhancements
- Finish the non-operating menus
- Adding more code for recognizing features

Also, I noticed that the Title numbers in the Raw data do not always correspond to the same numbers on the actual DVD. I haven't figured out how to do that yet, due to some issues with the various APIs I am using.

Please post issues and suggestions.
