Why not use a BY for the band Styx? Just use the year they were formed, or did I miss something again and BY's can only be for people?

Maybe because it's not a valid Birth Year? Using ficticious BYs is fine in your local but not for the invelos database.

But it would be the birth of the band as we know them today. Not sure if that's really ficticious, but I see your point that it's not a normal BY. My point is when a band is established, it's a birth year for that group/band. Or we can probably find the porn guy's BY somewhere and just tag him leaving the band. I'd go look, but already saw too much on the page I found before. He doesn't do porn I'm interested in or care to see.

This would be my thought as well.

A Band isn't "Born". Its formed by a group of individuals. The Contribution Rules regarding Birth Years is very explicit: Enter birth years only when necessary to differentate between two actors with the same name.

A Band isn't an Actor.

Bands should be treated like box sets. List the birth year of the oldest member at time of founding.

<stupid>Which version of Styx was credited in a profile?  The version before or after Dennis DeYoung left?  Because that would change the BY of the band.</stupid>

BY's are for people not bands.  No amount of hammering will get this square peg through that round hole.

While I agree about the bands, I don't understand the 'non-humans' part as animal actors are born.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Too late on animal actors, there are at least 3 BYs for animal actors in the db - one for each Bart the Bear, and one for Trigger.

Have to agree about the band BY though, be too tough to call, I mean some bands are hard to pin down on formation.  Locally, if it was me, I'd end up using a fake BY and be done with it.

One could argue that when bands are created/formed that they are "born".

Here is one definition that backs that up.

World English Dictionary
birth (b???) [Click for IPA pronunciation guide]

—n
1.  the process of bearing young; parturition; childbirthRelated: natal
2.  the act or fact of being born; nativity
3.  the coming into existence of something; origin
4.  ancestry; lineage: of high birth
5.  noble ancestry: a man of birth
6.  natural or inherited talent: an artist by birth
7.  archaic the offspring or young born at a particular time or of a particular mother
8.  give birth
a.  to bear (offspring)
b.  to produce, originate, or create (an idea, plan, etc)

But don't we use birth years to distinguish between actors and crew members of the same name, even though those are not strictly actors? It seems to me that the word actor in the rules should be interpreted as the name of anybody, person or group, which ends up being credited.

Kinda represents my feelings as well. I doubt I will ever own anything with the actor unless he "crosses-over" to mainstream horror, and I doubt there's many, if any, collectors of his brand of porn who also happen to use dvdprofiler. Even less who would fess up to it.

It looks like there are two gay porn actors by that name, with one video each and are unlikely to have much info forthcoming. However: a thought. At the beginning of any recent US-based porn, there's a disclaimer showing who to contact for proof all actors were over 18. If anyone has either title, they could contact the records office.

We do indeed; see Gerri Cole's ruling here. So you're right in that it's not only for "actors".

That's right, it's also to distinguish between "crew" members. Bands are not "crew" either .
