Why? If we're willing to change common names post-release, I don't see why other info that changes shouldn't get updated as well.

Because we are profiling that release as it was released and when it was released, it was 'unrated'...which is stated on the case.  As for common names, yes, we change those, but we don't change the credited name.  In the original release of Con Air, Dave Chappelle is credited as 'David'.  Do we change that information in the original profile?

Besides, this isn't the only cause of this issue. DVD publishers which aren't major studios (particularly Anchor Bay and Criterion) don't necessarily include rating information even on movies that were rated at the time of release.

Apples and oranges.  While the rules don't make a distinction, there is a difference between a release that has 'unrated' printed on it and a release that doesn't have anything printed on it.

Also, we accept ratings details from filmratings.com that aren't on the case. Why not the rating itself?

I would have no problem getting the rating from filmratings.com if there is nothing printed on the case...assuming the rules were changed to allow it.  If, however, the word 'unrated' is printed on the case, that is what we should use.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Thread's over, TheMadMartian's ruling has been made.
99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1."
