I'm with Pete on this one. I always put Television in first place in my genres, largely because I want to know how many tv shows/films I have in my collection; but also because I think it is correct from an accuracy point of view.

This discussion is why genres are considered so subjective and, in my opinion, should be a local-only field.

I agree on all points.

I don't see it that way. If it is a Television Movie (the way I always seen it written)... it is still IMHO Television first and foremost.

99.9% I agree... exception that proves the rule? The Last Seduction; denied an expected academy award because it was shown on TV before becoming so well received it was given a theatrical release...

I agree with that. Perhaps we need some new fields to characterize movies (television, but also Black and White... and others...), but television is not a genre. A western made for TV is a western... not a TV...

Genres are a way of sorting DVDS. I consider TV a genre because it allows me to classify my TV shows together.

I have started to change all my TV series so that, in the genre section, TV is listed first. This way when I want to know what TV shows I can "Sort by Genre" and have all my TV shows pop up together.

Please don't remove TV from the genre section because, for some of us, it is a helpful tool.

For those who do not use TV as a genre one has the ability to change or remove that data locally and it automatically locks.

I can understand that for people who collect DVDs. As for me, I collect only movies, and use genre as most people do when they speak of movies : a romance, a comedy, a drama, a thriller, a peplum, a western...

I agree that without any other field, Television can be useful for some of us. But I do not want to have in lists something I never use, and this "genre" doesn't exist anymore in my local. With a translation file, it became "Biographie".

Maybe that is why there is a software called "Movie Collector"...

I, too, move genres that don't describe the content of the movie into the back slots.

Stargate is a science-fiction (primary genre) movie. Stargate SG-1 is a science-fiction (primary genre) TV series (secondary "genre").

What is Superman? It's a fantasy/sci-fi story about a flying man. There are comics, movies and TV shows about him.

BUT: Until we have something else to qualify TV series, I don't want to lose that genre either.

It is considered a Genre in Profiler and always has been. Unless Ken changes HIS mind, it is what it is and this ridiculous and nonsensical argument or discussion is absurd. The answer is very simple, no matter what YOU may thi nk, in Profiler it is a Genre and ALWAYS has been so, if you wish to consider it not a Genre then that becomes a local decision and not a decision as it relates to the Online database. Very simple and why this endless prattle over such things is crazy. Accept it if and until such time as Ken makes a change.

What do I think personally? I think relative to Profiler Television is a Genre, and any discussion beyond that is pointless and all about users who want to ignore the program and what the developer has set up and impose their wishes on it. Never a good thing.

And I NEVER list TV as the number one Genre, LOCALLY. I frankly don't get the logic of those that do but that's their call. Shoul;d they re-order the Genre of a title set already to amtch their own prefernce, hell NO.

I only use TV as a genre cuz I saw it being done and approved, then wanted all my Tales from the Crypt seasons to match.

I agree with others that it isn't really a genre, but I still want the tags to know.

Which brings up my next point. For TV stuff, we have the rating option of TV, so genre is almost redundant. All the movies I have that were made for TV have TV, not film for the rating system. All TV shows have this as well.

There it is, problem solved with what we already have.

Unfortunately not. It's only because the US has two different rating systems for cinema and TV. In Germany you have only one system (FSK), in the UK it's the same (BBFC).

I think Ken chose the wrong title. DVD profiler is useless for most DVDs (data, games, programs, GPS, music...), and perfect for all movies, on DVD, Blu-ray, Laser disc, VHS, DivX, mp4... and even home made movies or old 8mm films.

In DVDProfiler it is.

You may not like it, but you can find it in the "Genre"-section of the profile-editor.
As long as it doesn't get removed from there we have to treat it as if it was a "Genre".

Come to think of "useless" entries in the Genre section:
In Germany we recently had a wave of contributions that added "Crime" to each and every "Thriller".
Since "Thrillers" always seem to include "Crime" and a "Crime"-story without any (at least intended) Thrill is something you will only very scarcely (for not saying "Never") meet, the Genre "Thriller" seems  to be somewhat superfluous.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

It is a genre in Profiler and yes it is Ken's baby and he'll do whatever he wants with it. But to call a peaceful discussion about this topic ridiculous, nonsensical and absurd is totally out of line. We can all think what we want. These forums are suppose to be discussions about Proviler the good and the bad. And until Ken removes them, that's what they will be. Personally you have no opinon you just go by the rules, no thinking for yourself. These discussions might give Ken a better idea of maybe some possible changes to the program.
And by the way. Television is not a genre it is a medium.
