| Posted: | | | | When did you start collecting DVDs? I was late to the party, not until late 2003. I had a huge collection of (mainly self-recorded) VHS tapes at the time though.
How old were you? 44
What was the first DVD you ever owned? There were a number I bought at the same time. One of these was a Series 1-4 box set of Absolutely Fabulous.
Was there ever a time that you grew tired of collecting and considered stopping? I have never considered stopping, however after going wild in 2004 and partially 2005 to build up my collection very, very fast I did slow down a bit. Nowadays, like DJ Doena, I find myself at the stage where I already have nearly all older movies I'd like to have. It's mostly Blu-rays (both new titles and DVD replacements) these days, and the occasional more exotic DVD (titles not available on Blu-ray).
First DVD Player? That was my trusted Denon DVD-2900. Fabulous machine, built like a tank and still performing beautifully at the home of a friend of mine. Currently for DVDs I use either an Oppo BDP-83 or a Denon DVD-3930 (both multi-region), whichever gives best results (for NTSC discs invariably the Oppo, for PAL the Denon still comes into play regularly). And then there's my Panasonic HDD/DVD/VHS recorder, which I do not normally use for mere playback. | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

What was the first DVD you ever owned? The store I bought it from had a promotion going on that you got 4 free dvd's with purchase of a DVD player. Perfect Storm Gossip Friends (Can't remember which disk) .... can't remember the 4th disk
But the First DVD we physically bought was Toy Story
Was there ever a time that you grew tired of collecting and considered stopping? No - but fiscal considerations & moving from the UK to Canada have meant that I don't buy as many as I'd like to - Play.com has a lot to answer for in those early years.
First DVD Player? Honestly can't remember, but it lasted about 2 years and then replaced it with a Home Cinema, 5.1 Surround Sound etc. | | | To Err is human, to really louse things up takes a Computer...... |

| Posted: | | | | When did you start collecting DVDs? I think it was early 1998. I was collecting Laserdiscs before that, and I wanted to make sure that DVD wasn't just a fad. By '98 it seemed fairly certain that it wasn't.
How old were you? I was 50.
What was the first DVD you ever owned? Not sure, but it might have been Cobra with Sylvester Stallone.
Was there ever a time that you grew tired of collecting and considered stopping? Nope. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | When did you start collecting DVDs? I'd say 2001, though I didn't have a way to track it at the time. I know that I probably had bought one or two in 2000/1, but actually collecting, 2004 when I discovered Profiler. At that point, I probably had about 60 dvds, and ~100 VHS that I slowly converted. Profiler definitely made me start buying a lot more that I ever dreamed of at the time.
How old were you? 21--when I first bought a DVD.
What was the fist DVD you ever owned? I don't know the exact first one, but I'd say either the first season of Buffy or Stargate SG-1, both shows I was really into and I remember saving up for a long time (back then, they were expensive and I was a poor college student!)
Was there ever a time that you grew tired of collecting and considered stopping? Never stopping, but the last 8 months or so, I've really slowed down. Space and money are the big reasons, but also, like others, I've pretty much have bought the ones I really want. At this point, in the new releases, I maybe buy one or two a month, if that. The ones I'm focusing on are the out of print ones that I shop around for and get a good deal. Most of my random purchases are cheap ($3 or less) deals.
First DVD Player? Have no idea, though I believe I used my parents' at first before finally buying one. If I remember correctly, I was excited to get it for around $100 and though that was a great deal. | | | Lori |

Was there ever a time that you grew tired of collecting and considered stopping? No Never always something new coming out whether a new release or a old one being released on DVD or Blu-ray.

| Posted: | | | | When did you start collecting DVDs? Sometime in 2000. I already owned a large VHS/D-VHS library, which had grown since the mid-1980s. I held out on moving to DVD until the format could replicate what VHS could do (record AND playback) without having to resort to a computer. Reasonably affordable domestic DVD player/recorders started to appear during 2000, so that was the excuse to abandon VHS/D-VHS and I moved across to optical discs.
How old were you? 32.
What was the fist DVD you ever owned? I actually bought a small number of DVDs (already discounted) before I owned a home DVD player/recorder. I used the DVD player on a laptop computer as the method of sampling the format back in about 1999.
And the first ever title I purchased was Porridge - The Movie.
Was there ever a time that you grew tired of collecting and considered stopping? No. Indeed I don't consider myself a collector, as DVDs simply replace modern broadcast television - something I grew disenchanted with toward the latter part of the 1980s. At the time, the material I had on VHS proved to be an adequate replacement. DVDs are simply another medium on which to access archive media I enjoy watching (old British cinema, archive UK television etc).
First DVD Player? I still have it - a Panasonic DMR-HS2 player/recorder. And it still works! | | | Last edited: by analogueman |

| Posted: | | | | When did you start collecting DVDs? July 28, 1998 I started a collection addiction in my teens, music. I still have transcriptions of copies of Artie Shaw's Concerto for Clarinet, Coleman Hawkins' The Man I Love and Charlie Parker's bebop solos, (Ornithology is a bitch to play, 4 sharps, 110 accidentals). The USAF, in Weisbaden, Germany, had a fantastic PX mall, In 1957, I started collecting jazz LPs, $2.50 each. The USAF built a nice wooden box to ship them back to the USA. Never opened or play them until 1964 when I came to Phoenix and finally settled down, stopped traveling and got my own hI-fi. Some 2,000 LPs. Then came Laser Discs about 1200 of them. How old were you? 64 What was the fist DVD you ever owned? Dark City UPC 794043465727 , July 28, 1998. Updated ten years and one day later , July 29, 2008, with a Blu_ray director's cut, a definite improvement Dark City UPC 794043122927 Was there ever a time that you grew tired of collecting and considered stopping? Every time I see all the changes that I need on my DVD profiles or check out an update and see that updater did not follow the rules and has changed the original cover scan to a re-release. First DVD Player? I don't remember, it must not been very satisfying. Currently Great for watching old TV series OPPO DV-971H (720p/1080i Up-Converting DVD Player), & Panasonic DVC50, multi-disc, on the last of the 1080 Trinatron. OPPO DV-981HD (1080p High Definition Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI ), OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Player & I just couldn't wait for Oppo to see my blu-rays, deal of the day Samsung BDP1500_XAA on HDTV | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own. | Posted: | | | | WOW i cant remember the answer to most of these questions. i had a bunch of vhs tapes(i joined and quit Columbia House many, many times). Dont remember the first DVD or how old i was but i didnt want to believe VHS tapes were being replaced. I had well over 100 tapes!! I do know my first dvd player was a gold color JVC player. i remember it costing about $200. I did go through a phase of selling my unwatched dvd's but after selling quite a few i realized i wasnt getting much back in return. i am back on track and now have around 1400 dvd's. i've come along way from my 100 VHS tapes!! |

| Posted: | | | | DVDs have not been around for very long so a lot of peoples start dates will probally be around 1998-2001.
for me it was around 13 or 14. i don't remember my first dvd exactly but i think it was one of the star wars movies or stargate sg-1 box sets and first dvd player was one of those typical cheap one you get at any wal-mart or other retail store that have no features. |

What was the fist DVD you ever owned? Twister, I bought it from Electronics Boutique for $40 AUD.
Was there ever a time that you grew tired of collecting and considered stopping? No, never but there was a time a few years ago when I didnt have that much money, so couldnt make all the purchases I wanted, but have since made up for it.
First DVD Player? The first real dvd player I had was a Himax player, which I got free with an air conditioner. |
