What's the difference between a theatrical distributor and release studio?

They are the same.  I think Martian was talking about Buena Vista distributing all things Disney for home media.

I was not.  Some studios have a separate company that does the actual distribution to the theaters.  It can be a subsidiary, as it is for Disney, or a completely different company, as it was for Disney.  Prior to 1953, Disney films were distributed by, Columbia Pictures, United Artists and RKO.  From 1953, to the present, it was Buena Vista.  If you look at the credits of their older films, you will see something similar to, "Distributed by Buena Vista."

Plenty of studio have, and continue to do this.  It is not uncommon.

I'm not sure which "logos which precede the film" you're referring to. If you're referring to the logos that come up when you insert the disc, then these would typically refer to the media companies. If however you're referring to for instance the roaring lion at the beginning of any MGM movie, then that is part of the film and is most likely the theatrical release studio.

Referring to the Lion or other logo. I would ignore those and take the theatrical release studio from where it says "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer presents" - so, depends on the film print.

So would I. For example, I just contributed changes to Billy Wilder's "Irma La Douce" (UK locality), which had the typical animated MGM's roaring lion logo in the beginning. However, MGM wasn't mentioned anywhere in the credits. Production company was given in opening credits, but theatrical release studio only in the end credits (as "Released thru' United Artists").

Another example:

Ponyo (2008)
CoO: Japan
Theatrical Releasing studio for Japan: Toyo Company
Production Studio: Studio Ghibli
Theatrical Releasing studio for US: Disney
DVD Distributor for US: Disney

For US DVD and Blu-ray, should Disney occupy the Studio field or just the media companies field?

In this case, Disney only provides an additional dub track and takes care of distribution. As such, I would only place them in the media company field, but not in the studio company field.

The same goes for FUNimation releases in the US: they add dubs and subtitles, but the main feature or series itself wasn't made by them. Hence, I only put them as media company.

BTW, wouldn't the theatrical distributor for Disney be Buena Vista Distribution?

See here: we don't list "Buena Vista Distribution".

Every R1 release has Disney as a studio so, while the poll seems to agree with your position, in practice, it isn't happening that way.
