I don't think it's any less useless than having the costume designer listed along with the four other wardrobe technicians, if we want to talk about watering down the credits.

I think the point is that all the main players on the writing side are being acknowledged for generating the final product you see.  Given the limited categories we have available, OMB is the only thing left.  The only other option is to lobby for a new credit, but do we really want to go through and audit everything again?

If it makes the profiles more correct and informative, yes.

The main difference here is that those wardrobe functions are all listed in the crew chart for acceptable roles. Adaptation By is not so even that makes it questionable at this point.

IMO, adapted by is not original material at all. Someone is adapting someone else's characters and ideas for a movie, they aren't creating something original themselves.

What if your "original material" is a novel, but the novel is based on existing stories or legends, or even factual events?  Would not that novel still be OMB?  Likewise, an adaptation can (and should) be OMB, IMO.

Also, an adaptation may have been made for the movie, but it may also have been made for other purposes.  For example, I recently audited a film with the following credits:

"Screen Play by"
"Material Compiled by"
"Based on Data from Stories by"

The compilation (aka adaptation) may have been made for some reason other than the movie.  The credits don't tell us, but they do imply the screenplay is based on the compilation rather than directly on the stories.

I don't see this job under acceptable roles either. = We don't credit compilers.

Ditto for adapters.
