On several TV series I have seen a Supervising Director.

Does a Supervising Director get credited?

Unfortunately, yes.

I think I am going back to not even bothering with crew updates. It is confusing enough trying to follow that chart... but then I see all these yes here... but no there posts in the forum... it just isn't worth trying to figure it out.

I feel your pain Pete.  It is a minefield and there are plenty of users who add more and more mines to the field.

Are "Music Supervisors" allowed under this rule
Quote:
Do include "Supervising" credits in the above categories, examples: "Supervising Art Director", "Makeup Supervisor", except where explicity forbidden above.

BTW: just noticed there is a spelling mistake in this rule

The rule examples sited are under the "Art" credits section. You are trying extend the Supervisor title across bounds. If :Music Supervisor" where allowed it would seem better defined under the "Music" credit section.

Crediting crews is a pain, there is no end to the application and creation of titles.
Man truly love his titles, some people will even take a title over a raise.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

Doesn't really matter as those are just 'examples' and are neither all inclusive nor exclusive.  As written, unless expressly forbidden...as they are by the composer notes...any supervisor credit that starts or ends with a valid profiler credit is allowed.

The notes for 'Music by' read, "Used for the composer of the film's Original Score."  The Music Supervisor did not compose the film's original score, so should not be entered.

Yes to adding crew credits by function instead of syntax only.

Music Supervisor is not explicitly forbidden by the rules, so it is allowed.

In older animated shorts, there is often a credit for Music Supervisor. The person credited (for example Oliver Wallace) with that role did the exact same job back in the 40s as he did when he was credited as 'composer' or 'music by' in the 50s. The job title has evolved over the years. So for older movies, Music Supervisor is allowed

That being said, I would not add music supervisor for newer movies.

This isn't a problem for just  music supervisor though. We have the same problem with wardrobe supervisor and costume supervisor. Those titles were added to the rules to cover older movies, but are totally different for newer movies.

Unfortunately, people here seem to have a very hard time dealing with "if... then" approaches like that (lovely example here).

You're absolutely right. But there again, people have proven to be unable to deal with that, and as such we're now consistently shoehorning people into the "costume designer" field that really shouldn't be there. The rule should really tell us to track "wardrobe supervisor" and "costume supervisor" only when there is no "costume designer" credit. This was heavily campaigned for as soon as the "costume designer" credit was added to the software, but unfortunately Ken never ever weighed in on the matter...
