Just one small problem if this is correct:

However there are reports that there are sets that aren't affected by this error and do contain the correct episodes on disc 3.

Then the release with the error and the release without the error (released at the same time) most probably have the same Disc ID...

I know that with comics or stamps, a mistake can be quite valuable.

Has that ever been the case with a DVD?

Perhaps, but for contribution purposes it's totally irrelevant whether a release (mistake or not) is valuable or not. Nowhere do the contribution rules refer to how rare or valuable a release is.

Ah, I can see that.  I couldn't wrap my mind around "bad data" being valuable.

Doc:

You can't wrap your mind around an upside down airplane stamp ("bad data") that's worth well over a million dollars.     I bet you could wrap your hands around it.

Ah, but the "Inverted Jenny" is only worth half a million dollars.

But even though the stamp is a defect, it still could be affixed to an envelope and mailed (with additional postage ) so it still could be used as-is.

Leaving the profile with the bad data in the box set will only cause people to want to contribute the box set with their good disc until the end of time.  Putting both the good and the bad disc in the box set as suggested will only cause people to want to contribute the box set minus whatever disc they don't have.

When people realize that they have a bad disc, they will either return the entire set for the good version or order the good disc to replace their bad disc (and probably have to mail the bad disc to get it).  End result: 99% of the people out there will have the box set with only the intended disc.

So, we leave the profile for the bad disc in there to cater to 1% of the people?

It is not a defect. it i s an error. Will such errors become valuable, who knows, the medium is still in its infancy in that regard. We can only point at other at other collectibles as examples of errors which have been made are highly valued and desired...because of the error.

I can just see you trying to argue Scott or Harris (Stamp Collecting) over the value of including bad data about the jenny or any of the multitude of errors in philately. Or the double-stamp coins whch were errors and got into the hands of the public. It's an error, it's NOT a defect, it's not "bad data", it is a mistake that was made in the manufacturing process and found its way through the system without being discovered and is now in the hands of the public. Now unlike the Post Office or the mint, the Home Video industry can issue "recalls" asking retailers not to sell them (which they may or may not do) and they can offer replacements to those who desire to replace the error disc. The customer is not obligated in any way to accept such an offer and may NOT exercise it. I don't, I will replace a genuinely defective disc (a disc that will not perform), but I will not replace a mistake, I will secure a second copy so that I own both the corrected copy and the mistake. If you replace your errors, then you in theory, only make mine more valuable...so please be my guest...I welcome it. I have no idea whether this pan out as I hope it will, it's far too soon to know. But by the same token you should not deprive me or any other user the ability to catalog such data for himself and others. The DiscID for the error and for the correction will always be two different DiscIDs, so where is the harm to those of you who only want the "correct" disc...there is none, we can capture both sets of data, and if I am lucky, one day I will, laugh at you....alll the way to the bank<fingers crossed>.

Yes.....AND your point is. How many inverted Jenny's are in circulation, Doc. Far less than 1%, are you suggesting that Scott or Harris should remove them from their catalogs because there might be only  .0001% of them out there somewhere. Sometimes the narrow-mindedness which inhabit this place is simply stunning (no Offense intended)

Oh and BTW the last time the Jenny came up for sale was in 2007, and it sold on the auction block for $977,500, there was exactly one pane of 100 such stamps that escaped the Post Office and they were subsequently separated, some used (no doubt). A block of four sold in 2005 for $2.7M, a far cry from $500,000.

Finally getting back to this set.

I got the replacement disc 3 with the correct episodes.

The DISC ID is 62B544D15E6BC9BD.

So now what do I do?

Do I add the corrected disc to the parent profile, or link it as a box set or not link it at all and just add it as a stand alone disc to the main database.

Don't ask the forum, just do what you feel is right and let the actual owners of the DVD set decide via vote.

I often see that people who don't even own the set feel that their opinion is the only valid one and go as far as add the set to their wish list just to vote on a profile they will never lay eyes on again.

I'm sorry, but I find this entire statement quite insulting.

As to the question, as I understand the rules, the parent profile must reflect what was actually released.  Whether or not you follow those rules, however, is up to you.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I'm sorry you feel that way but I've seen it far too often over the years I've been here.

When I have a question where I'm genuinely clueless, I still come here.

When I know from the start that there will be disagreements because it's a judgement call about a very specific issue (like a misprinted disc that is even replaced by the distributor) I feel it's best to let only people decide who have to actually live with the profile the way it is.

This is not a common name issue that will have widespread influence on the overall database. This is a question concerning one specific profile and the people who actually own that DVD.
