Not true.

If you already own the disc and choose to add by UPC code, all it does is identify the profile and then you can select the Preview button just fine. You can't add it to your collection, sure, but you can still use the preview functionality.

If you choose to add by title, the profile you already own will still appear in the list (with a house icon next to it, like northbloke said) and you can still select it and use the same Preview button to see the current status of that profile.
