What if a season box set includes six discs in three cases ("volumes" 1 to 3) and each case has a UPC of its own? Would you create profiles for both the season box set (by UPC), the three  volumes (by UPC) and the six discs (by Disc IDs)?

Something like:

Season# box set (UPC0)
  - Volume1 (UPC1)
      -- disc 1
      -- disc 2
  - Volume2 (UPC2)
      -- disc 3
      -- disc 4
  - Volume3 (UPC3)
      -- disc 5
      -- disc 6

yeah... that is how I would do it.

I use that, too, but only if I got more than one item for that show (e.g. 10 Seasons of "Stargate" get a virtual box "Stargate" but "Friends: The Complete Series" doesn't get it because it's only one root entry.

Same here.  But only for TV sets.  I have no problem breaking out movie sets.  Even if I have to use manual profiles to do it correctly (multiple movies per side of disc).  There's no logical reason why I go to one extreme for movies and the other way for TV sets, but up till now, that's how I've done it.

Agreed, if I used child profiles for TV series I'd do it that way

I think there is a misunderstanding.

I don't do one item per per physical item.

I've got three different approaches to TV shows:

a) one seaseon series

Alien Nation: The Complete Series (an actual box)
+ Disc 1
+ Disc 2
+ ...

b) multiple season series

24 (a virtual box)
+ Season 1 (an actual box)
++ Disc 1
++ Disc 2
++ ...
+ Season 2 (an actual box)
++ Disc 1
++ ...
+ ...

c1) complete series box with seperate season boxes

Friends: The Complete Series (an actual box)
+ Season 1 (an actual box)
++ Disc 1
++ Disc 2
++ ...
+ Season 2 (an actual box)
++ Disc 1
++ ...
+ ...

c2) complete series box without seperate season boxes

Xena: The Complete Series (an actual box)
+ Season 1 (a virtual box)
++ Disc 1
++ Disc 2
++ ...
+ Season 2 (a virtual box)
++ Disc 1
++ ...
+ ...

I have not been using child profiles (unless packaged separately) for TV series.

To use the watched by feature.

But this is why I am currently considering doing so.

I have been collecting the child profiles in the Ordered tab for a while now and am now missing only two series. Actually, depending how phpdvdprofiler reacts to it (don't want to have my stats messed up) I may decide to keep Cast & Crew in the parent still and purely use the children for Watched tracking...

We can make it work any way you'd like

I tend to put C&C in child profiles, leaving containers blank, but that's certainly not the only way to do it ...

a little SQL magic and you're off to the races ...

yeah... that is how I would do it.

Next question then...
At what level (season?, volume?, disc? all of them?) would you contribute the following data:
-Cast and Crew
-Studios, CoO, Production Year, etc.
-Features, Audio Tracks, Subtitles
-Episode List
-"Discs" info

What if you're adding disc-level child profiles to existing "Season" parent profile + "Volume" child profiles that already include all those data?

And, yes, I did read the Rule on disc-level profiles, but I am not entirely clear on what it actually implies.

Quoting Contribution Rules
Quote:

Disc-level Profiles Individual profiles for each disc may be submitted if desired, but this is not required. Add these profiles to the box set contents of the parent profile. Create each of these individual profiles in line with the standard Contribution Rules with one exception - Cover Images. If a disc, or set of discs, have their own case, use the cover images from that case. When submitting a change to an existing TV series profile that is currently a box set, do not remove the existing contents.

In either case, the cast and crew are to be entered into the parent profile using appropriate episode dividers.

It means that all the info would go in each profile (that it covers) so that people that only use parent profile would get all info submitted... if someone wanted to use just parent and volume profiles the info is there depending how they prefer to do it.... and for those of us that prefer disc level profiles the info is there for use as well..

Then everyone is free to locally remove the info from the profiles they don't want it at. For example... I personally prefer my cast and crew at disc level... so I would download all the info and remove the cast and crew from parent and volume levels... and lock the cast and crew to those profiles. Giving me the cast and crew at the level I want them.

And if someone only wants parent profile wouldn't have to worry at all since they wouldn't have no child profiles for them.

This way no matter how people choose to keep the info... it is there for them.

Agree with Martin. I'll never understand why someone would use child profiles for TV series in the first place.
To use the watched by feature.

And how is that different then having one profile for the season? It either makes sense to have the ability to mark each episode alone as watched, or a season set (IMO).
This is why I track episodes in my CCViewer (where I have a "Watched by" per episode) and only have one profile in DVD Profiler for the season sets.

100% agree... episode level adds value (correct "watched by"), but disc level is no improvement in my eyes, since we can seperate Cast & Crew with dividers.

Ok, thanks. What about Production Year? Would you use it at disc level according to the air dates?

yup... the year of the first aired episode on that (Disc Level) disc/(Vol. Level) in that volume/(Parent Level) of the whole collection.

Some of us watch disc by disc.
Besides, you can find out which discs contain commentaries or other features, or sometimes Overview information relevant to a single disc.
