Well, maybe because they are pre-set by the manufacturer to show the best possible picture quality for those particular activities?  I have no idea what they actually control.  The brightness is a separate control which is set at 70 and is how I've always had it and has no effect on those settings.  There is no separate "Contrast" control that I can find so you may be right that those settings control Contrast in some way.  I do have control over Red, Blue, and Green, but no Contrast.  It's fully calibrated so I have no doubt as far as colors go.  I can pull up any photo on the internet and everything looks just as it should as far as colors go.

Now I just know to definitely use the "Desktop" mode when viewing scans versus any other modes since it appears the other modes "correct" visual impurities that exist otherwise.

I agree that in general the reds are consistently far too amped up on many existing scans.  Why must everyone look sunburned?  I have contributed scans of covers that in actuality are more brown than red (some Karate Kid set covers, for example) and were a much more factual representation of the actual cover than the day-glo red existing scans.  But they get voted down for reasons which sound patently ridiculous if you actually compare the images to the cover.  I can only attribute it to poorly tuned monitors and folks preferring bright shiny glowing blotchy objects.

In the example in this thread, aside from the neon red faces look at the red letering of the title on the left hand image.  It looks absolutely terrible, and is a far too typical problem of many ultra-saturated-red scans.  That being said, the image on the right has even more problems, most already mentioned.

I think that those of you who don't see the grid, might have the brightness set too high, which would washout the gray and make it white.

I reduced the brightness but still didn't see the grid. But then I changed the viewing angle to the screen and that's where the revelation came! If I look straight at the screen the grid is hardly noticable, but when I view the screen at an angle of 30°, then this nasty grey lines show up.

Will have to check those images with my screen at home (the above descritpion applies to my notebook at work).

I do see the grid, very clearly even.

It all depends on your monitor settings. If I remember correctly, it was Rifter who pointed us at this monitor calibration tool some time ago. Could be of some use here.

Also, in my experience some providers of digital photo services (where you can have your personal digital photobooks printed) are willing to send you a color sample print and then you can compare that sample to the same picture on their website, so you can adjust your monitor settings to get as close a match as possible. Here's a provider in Belgium that works that way.

If you use a scanner and the scan of the picture on the screen is not identical to the cover image you've scanned, you either have to change your scanner program settings or those of your monitor. I often have seen scans which were too bright or had the wrong colors, so it requiers a lot of practice to get things right.

It is a very difficult thing to get right. I scan my images for my site (see signature link below), tagged as 'sorted covers' when done, compressed to a level I am happy with for my own use. These are higher res and larger than dvdp, so when I contribute any scans to the database they are compressed again and often the results are disappointing (often mine appear too dark).
If I believe there is a significant improvement I submit them, but have no hangups if I get a no vote as it is truly a subjective vote based on visual interpretation. If I get more than one no vote then I withdraw it.

RR

PS If you want a higher res image in your dvdp for any matching title of mine, I think you can go to my site, click on the front or back cover for the larger image, and copy and paste to your local DVDP. Remember it is tagged titles with 'sorted covers' that have the improved images

I would say the one on the left is way too saturated, and it looks like the yellow levels are a bit high too judging by the flesh tones.
The one on the right seems to have it right in terms of colour balance, but isn't saturated enough. And I can see the faint grey stripes on this scan too.

And as Rich says, it's surprising how much the image changes once you've submitted. Whenever I submit a cover scan I always go in and check to see what it looks like on the voting screen.

Scan any way you want for your local database. But if you submit a scan larger than 500 pixels wide or 700 pixels high, it will be reduced and it will change, and the change will not make it look better or even as good.

So... Do not submit a scan larger than 500 x 700 pixels. If you keep your 5" x 7" image at 100 dpi, it will be correct, but if it is any larger, it will get trashed.

Keep your larger scans in your local db, but do not expect the rest of us to see them as pretty as you do.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Yep comparing the images on my desktop PC hooked up to an external monitor & my laptop with it's built in monitor, the left image is way over saturated on the faces and I see the grid lines on the image on the right.

On my laptop the left image is much less 'bright' although still over bright but the right image has lost the grid lines. I blame it on Acer's crystalbright technology, which I know is crap for colour as the green background that appears when a contribution is accepted/released in the My Contribution page is practically invisible on default settings.

Mine's up high (the contrast) for two reasons.  The first is I play a couple games that are very dark and unless the contrast is high, I can't see things in the corners.  The second is one of the users of the computer is virtually blind and the higher contrast makes it easier for him to see writing.

Slightly off topic but you may want to consider an alternative graphics card if you're in a position to do so. I've noticed with games (not so much contrast for poor eyesight) that Nvidia cards tend to default to being much darker than ATI ones.

........................Ok  ,, I have pulled the contribution (027616-865915) and put in the two other scans both 027616-902740.. one is USA and the other is Canada.  These are the only three in the data base under Region 1 .  I haved switched the front covers around with 027616-865915 and contributed said covers..

Let's sit back and see how the fishing will be today...

Because then you can see things you actually shouldn't. Imagine a dark tunnel you are going through and there are monsters. If you make it bright enough you can see them earlier.

It's like gamma correction

PS: I see no grey grid.

Yeah, but you said yourself, you weren't supposed to see it. You just broke the game's creator intent. Isn't it the same thing as WS vs FS?

Not all, but quite a few games, especially those that are trying to scare you, usually include a calibration screen for you to adjust the in-game brightness setting so it's just right.

But if a game is irritating me with it's darkness level I have been known to whack it up and break the intent.

I should flip this around and download the other title to my wish list and then 'flip' that cover too, ,and I can guarantee it will get no votes too ...    You can't win on Invelos. There is bad data all over and no matter how hard you try and correct it will still remain.. .

here are some recent results on my recent submission (above)...

You tried, but original front is still better
Too much saturation / sunburned faces
too much red in the front though
Nice job!
New scans are slightly too red
generally better, but faces seem orange to me.

Skip...    We need the Power of your Scanner to the Rescue... MY epson 5000 won't be able to cut what your scanner can produce ..
