Were I a producer in Hollywood, I would probably release my movies with credits which made sense wherever they were released. A Swedish DVD would have Swedish credits, an Italian DVD would be in Italian and so on. BUT that's me, and unfortunately the film industry doesn't listen to me.

In the end, open credits will only increase the value of the DB, especially if people can pick and choose what they want in there local, and still have the ability to reference the massive online.

I personally have no objection to open credits as long as we keep the existing broad categories to place them in.  I'm just pointing out that others have equally legitimate reasons for not wanting open credits.  The fact is, we can do pretty much what we want to now, locally.

Indeed.  If Ken can make the existing Custom Role field contributable, it no longer matters that we shoe horn credits as the Custom Role will give us the proper meaning of the credit.

As I suggested earlier, I don't think any of the "open credit" folks object to categories. Most films do this anyway.

In your hypothetical, what would happen when someone enters the entire crew set using nothing but the custom field as an early profile for a new release?

Maybe I am not understanding the question, but I would assume the same thing that happens now...it remains until someone has a chance to audit the credits.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

We will teach it to them again.

I would like to have a statement of KEN if he is planning to implement the open credits crap that those non-contributors are suggesting.

And as I have spoken to some of the main contributors during the last hours, many will follow deejays decision and will immediately stop with everything that helps the DVD Profiler community.

Soon you are left here with a few people , and all they are doing is suggesting ridiculous changes to a great program.

And then you will ask yourself, why did all those contributors, pluginmakers, helpful guys have left, and why are we left here with a bunch of (insert a word of your choice).

I wish you stop with inflammatory language. has it occurred to you that open creds just might be enough to make some people who stopped Contributing start again. And frankly, if I ever do start up again you won't be able to keep up with me.

I could flood the cue right now, just with new title that are not in the database.

I would only support full open credits on one condition: that we separate disc and movie data in the database so that movie data with all its continuing updates and changes is propagated to all profiles containing the same title. Anything else would be utter madness. The current system is barely sustainable as it is. Or we scrap all regions and localities except one, and make disc data strictly local. We would then finally have Movie Profiler. Oh joy!

Naturally this would require a major redesign of the program, as well as an efficient way to handle exceptions. Luckily I believe the developer has more fruitful enterprises in mind...

40 want some form of Open credits. FORTY. I have also seen enough damage done by the alleged majority to the database in terms of functionality and usability that the opinion of majority means very little to me. I have also said I will accept a compromise, but the existing system is a mess and getting worse. So can it, my friend.

Fully agreed,

and yes

luckily I am SURE that KEN will never ever do that, no matter how hard Skip, Dan and a few others try, that is what makes me smile right now....in the end they will not get it their way.

Kino:

Because of what we are dealing with I think, as you put it. DiscProfiler and Movie/TVProfiler are inextricably linked. No one would buy Disc Profiler if that were the Only data captured, no one would buy MovieProfiler or movie/TVProfilerbecause it already exists, bad as it is. We are DVDProfiler and we try to capture everything relevant to the DVD, that includes tjhe Movie data as well as the Disc data.. The idea of marrying all the titles under one unified dataset has been suggested and isn't practical since such a thing does not exist, sometimes it does, sometimes not, I have seen American films that DO have international credits that are different in content from the "home" version, I have seen foreign films that have US credits that are different in content from their "home" version. So while it's a nice idea, unified data does not lead to more accuracy. Heck, we have even have different versions of the SAME film that have different Cast and Crew data, sometimes it is subtle, but it is different. I would love to figure out a way to deal with the translation issue that has been raised, as it is the only semi-legitimate issue, maybe i can come up with an idea. But unified data is NOT the answer, unfortunately.

You might be right, Donnie, people like you may very well continue to drag the database off the cliff. You are certainly intent on doing so.

And 33 don't want them.

Wait, needs more emphasis... 33 don't want them. THIRTY THREE

As I said earlier. The community is split. You keep carrying on like it's a 3-1 majority or something.

But 40 is the majority by a long shot, Rick, or suddenly that's not good enough for you. Why would i not be surprised           Maybe I should start calling you Al Gore.

Rick while i don't buy into the majority, you have numerous times. live by the sword, die by it. But, please, do it gracefully.

More accurately 27 don't want change 6, you can not be sure of (I am 1 of those 6 and put myself square between 1 & 2)

so 46 want change 27 don't
