I wish there was a field like the contribution notes or something, but within the program itself where you could explain things like that. I mean you should contribute like the rule say, but I also would be very happy if I got your list about what you consider "stars", because I do not always know who are the stars before I watch a movie. And I would also like to have the stars first. Just a thought.

Just to be clear, I do not do this based on who I consider to be the stars, I do it based on who the studio considers to be the stars.  I know who they believe the stars are because, as is the custom in Hollywood, the people they consider to be stars are usually listed, without roles, in either the opening credits or right after the film prior to the closing credits...and, since I mentioned it, I should note that I only know this works for Hollywood studio films, I can't say whether or not it works for other parts of the world.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Do you have any idea how big that can of worms is that this would open up?

Don't worry be happy.
It was just a wish and a thought.

This is the weirdest forum I have ever been at. So many negative thoughts and so little positive and creative thinking.  Not meant for you, but in general.

It's not really negative thoughts. We came a long way, a way from chaos to where we are right now and many here know that you need the rules and no way for interpretation, if that's possible, to make this work, to prevent the data ping-ponging that was going on many years ago.

BTW, questions with somewhat similar problems as the overview dilemma:

1. Genres: Should we only submit genres stated on the cover - noting else?

2. Studios: When submitting studios. I assume we should only take this from the disc, not the cover? Should we then use the company names displayed on the film or their official registered name?

I'm not going to argue one way or the other, just want to know what the rules are now (I have read the rules but they are not very specific at this point).

And things have been even worse in the past, when proposing to correct errors made you a war criminal. Though it is possible to have friendly discussions with some users, trying to make things improve is quite impossible with the most vocal users refusing any evolution. The result is that many contributors (as I was in the past) totally stopped contributing, and now keep for themselves their databases that link, sort or filter correctly.

The process of evolution is mostly dead ends.

And even successfull solutions becomes obsolete when better ones appear.

But even dead ends may reappear as good ones at a later time, when it fits into the environment in a better way - who knows...?

I don't understand the hostility.  There was a questioned asked and answered, within the confines of the parameters of this thread

This forum serves as a place for asking questions about rules, or asking how to apply a particular rule in a specific contribution.  Feel free to ask any question you like about a contribution you've made or are planning to make.

When discussing a contribution that you did not submit, consider first what you wish to accomplish:

If you wish to state your reasons for voting 'No':
- Use the (expanded) contribution vote reason field

If you wish to ask the contributor a question:
- Use the PM function. If the user has blocked you, do not bring the question to the forums. Instead, vote based on what you know.

If you run into a user who you believe is copying third party data in violation of our rules:
- Use the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of this page to report the user to Invelos evaluators for scrutiny.

If you have a general question on how to vote for a particular circumstance:
- Make a post in this forum, but please keep your post polite and to the point.

Please note: This forum is not the place to "call out" contributors, berate them, or to impugn their motives.  This is also not the place to restate your reasons for voting No on a particular contribution, nor to encourage others to do so.  When making a post here, please bear these rules in mind.

The OP

Should we write the exact text from the cover, even when there are obvious typing errors, or should these be corrected?

The OP was answered by many people per the rules, even quoting a clarification by Gerri

Quoting Gerri Cole
Quote:
Just to clarify....
This rule:
"Overviews should match the back of the DVD case exactly"
means that if there is a spelling error printed on the box, then you enter the overview with the spelling error.

This comment in the rules:
"You are making a subtle change that may be hard to spot - for example spelling correction to the overview. "

Refers to the fact that if someone else has entered an overview previously (or you did) and you fat fingered something, then when you correct it, then you need to call it out in contribution notes.

This is to help the voters understand what you changed because it is not highlighted when they view the changes.

-Gerri

(emphasis by me)

That should have been the end of the discussion within this thread, but noooo.  The insinuations and accusations fly.

IF YOU (whoever disagrees with the rule), want a rule change, then they need to either

1. (Within the Contribution forum) Write up a rule proposal
    put it up for discussion
    alter proposal per discussion
get a consensus (From the community)
send it to Ken for his approval/disapproval

2.  Appeal directly to Ken for a rule change

Otherwise, the rest of this discussion does not belong in this thread....

You don't understand the hostility?  Here is my take on the situation--- Beta personalities thinking that they are Alpha personlities (Who are always right and people should be following their way of thinking).

I'm still laughing.

It has nothing to do with online (web) display. We want to download (already corrected) overviews and contribute (corrected) overviews exactly as we do with every other field. No need for an online DB at all if everyone should fill in all their own fields.

Likewise, there would be no need for a personal database if you insist on having everything the same as the online. A simple list of UPC or disc ID matches would do. It goes both ways. You still haven't understood that they exist because they have different purposes. Instead you assume that everyone wants the same thing as you and therefore there must be something wrong with the online.

However it will be too much work to make two different versions on thousands of DVD's and I want to contribute to the online database, so i'll stick with the rules both online and locally despite my disagreement.

You have thousands of DVDs with spelling errors? Norway must be worse than I thought!

The rules don't tell us where to take the genres. You don't have to fill them in if you don't know which genre(s) the film belongs to.

"Genres are often a matter of personal interpretation, which can differ among users. If your personal preference for Genre differs from the main database, you can store the information you prefer in your local database and lock the Genre field from further updates. Do not make contributions that only change or re-order Genres, unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect."

As you see, this is a field that is specifically left open to personal interpretation, but the rules also discourage people from making minor changes. Personally, I set my genres, lock them, and seldom bother with them again so I don't really care what the online has or what changes are made to them later.

Studios should be entered from the film (disc) credits, if possible. Sometimes it will require a bit of research to find out things like the theatrical release studio. Use the name from the film credits.
