I would like to have the ability to add biographical data for cast and crew members.
Such as exact birthdates and death dates including month and day.
Place of birth and death.
Relatives and spouses.
Complete filmography, including titles not on disc.
Other data that I can't think of right now.

Not sure if it would help or not, but you could use the notes section on the personal section. And it's searchable.

Or the plugin SideCar. But maybe not ... those custom fields are at the profile level. But it is there if you want to take a look.

Another idea: find a way to trick the credit photos or scene photos. The information would not be searchable if you kept the image instead of text, but it's an idea. Since it is biographical information, it wouldn't change so much. Just keep a folder of nicely formatted bio info as pdf or powerpoint, and save pages as necessary as images.

I have an idea of how I could add this to SideCar (no reason other than to avoid the overhead oif supporting another plugin).

I was thinkig of doing a mockup of the UI that people could play with, so it would be no impact on the database. Anybody interested in messing with a prototype and suppling feedback? I wouldn't even mind if somebody wants to totally replace it - if the community likes it better. Then I could either "plugin-ize" it, or help the other guy get started if he is not already a plugin developer.

But wait, isn't CinematicCollectionViewer already sort of that? I guess I need to go ahead and install the plugin to learn it. I keep recommending it, but have only a brief understanding if what it does. I absolutely HATE redoing work that has already been done, or stomping on some other good plugin. So, everybody who is interested, please take at look at that one before going forward ...

I just think we need this feature fully integrated within DVDPro. I was messing around with a few external applications like Free MovieDB, Movie Library and Memento Database a while ago, just trying and create my own local Actors library of personal information, career info and movie history. But I gave up, because even though it had alot of the information I wanted on individual Actors, I got frustrated with the thought that this should be part of DVDPro, and if it ever was, I didn't want to have to compile it all over again (it's alot of work and very time consuming). So I still wait here in hope it will happen one day

Totally understand. But just so you know where I was coming from, my proposal is to use the new feature in DVDP called custom fields. The Bio app I am proposing will store all information in the database and online, be filterable and available in HTML windows. See the SideCar plugin for an example. Create a test database and play with it, to get an idea of what it means.

One of the justifications for plugins, is that new features can be put into DVDP without needing to wait for official releases or depending on an already overloaded Ken. But if the view continues to be "if not in the base product, then we will either do without it, or wait", then I will just stop proposing plugins. Hammer looking for nails - why bother.

What if a couple of developers collaborated on a plugin - the new kind, that can save data into the database, so you don't have to redo it later?

Would you be willing to contribute your design ideas for what data needs to be captured and then test the prototypes? Don't worry, no hard feelings if you say no, and stick to your guns. Trust me, there is lots of work to be done. This item just happened to catch my attention.

I'd love to help on a project like this, but I don't have any programming experience (if that's what will be required?). I've been involved in computing since the early 90's, and have been using DVD Profiler for about 12-14 years (back when it was owned by InterVocative Software) and there wasn't a 50 Profile limit without a valid registration key.

I have spent many of those years personalising my own local database (best Actor photos I can find, best cover art etc..). I use it more as a Actor and movies information library over just cataloguing my own collection of DVD films (which I have). Aside from my own titles, I have created Profiles for about 10,000 "Hollywood" type movies and 1,200+ Asian movie titles. I tell you all this, because I am a very passionate and enthusiastic user of the software, and yes if there's anyway I can help, or just input ideas to move it closer to the product I think it can completely be...I'd love to be involved. Let me know
______________________________________________________________________

Also, I forget to mention, I even like to add things like movie trivia, goofs, continuity errors, AKA info and other stuff on a title that I can find on websites like IMDB. Then I add it to the "Notes" field of that particular Profile. Along with movie screenshots to "Gallery" that I know many others like to do. It's an all-round experience for me using and building DVD Profiler.

Hey now!!!! Something is cooking in the kitchen!

Well, just to start small and easy, do you have any kind of sample app that is xx% close to what you would want as a user interface? If so, maybe just share a screen shot or two.

If not, just whenever you have a few minutes, try to share the type and format of data you capture - like you already did - just more complete details.

That would be a great start. And thanks for your openness and compassion.

OMG I just noticed your country flag! Guess where I am now? East London, visiting my son and his family. Having a blast with my grand daughter. Heading back to New York tomorrow.

Another point about plugins - not specifically to you, but to any who may be following our conversation: I've noticed that Ken sometimes waits to see how people react to plugins before spending the effort to change the program. I remember:

Before Copy/Paste, we had BulkEdit, which is still here, but Copy/Paste does a lot - easily and simple to use.

Before the ability to email, there was DVDeMail, now obsolete. Need I say it, Ken's version is better.

Before My Links, there was LoadDVD, still here, but for basic functionality, My Links is fine.

Before Custom Categories, there was MyTabs (a disaster, now obsolete).

(I only mentioned mine, but the same has happened with other developer plugins as well).

Now we have Custom Fields. And this thread has presented one of the most outstanding ways to try and use it. So, let's try. Ken put an enormous amount of effort into that capability.

I've taken a few example screenshots from an entry with the "Free_MovieDB" software that focuses on an Actors profile - bio, dob, age, place of birth, filmography, film posters and screenshots of the Actor from movies, award shows etc.

This software actually also incorporates additional info that I have been using myself for years (and not copied from another person's idea) like goofs, trivia and one I don't use quotes. Anyway, how do I upload without the use of some external image managing site? As far as I can tell, you can just upload photos to a message directly right...you have to link to a image vault?

Send me a private message and I can give you an email address where you can attach images. I can then put them on my own web site for posting here. Based on what you've mentioned so far, the only thing we would probably avoid up front would be awards, since there is already a plugin for that, with a documented format for loading awards data. So, it would be someday be possible to also load that data into DVD Profiler.
