What damage a simple twist to the knee can do...

I twisted my knee about a month and a half ago... and it has been driving me crazy every since. I went to the doctor and found out I tore the meniscus disc, which is tissue in between the bones of my knee that cushions the joint. As it turns out I tore it so bad that my only option is surgery. They make three small cuts in my knee and go in with small equipment to repair the damage. The surgery is scheduled for the 13th of this month. And the recovery time is 4 to 6 weeks.

Down Side: This is the first operation I am to have that they will have to put me to sleep. I have a bad phobia about being put to sleep. This has me scared to death about the surgery. I would be fine... even excited about the surgery if they would just completely numb my leg and let me watch!

Up Side: The x-rays showed no bone damage but did show the arthritis in my knee. The surgeon said while he is in there he could scrape the bones and relieve that arthritis. I know it will just gradually go back to where it was... but once I heal that knee should feel better then it has in years!

Bonus Up Side: This also means I will be off the entire month of October to watch horror movies!

A lot of school bus drivers develop knee problems and have surgery, including my wife. I have not heard any horror stories (no pun intended), so lay back, enjoy the drugs and keep us abreast of the outcome.

Yea, I know that being put to sleep worries a lot of people, but you fall to sleep before you even realize/expect to and even if the surgery took hours, you feel like you are awake within seconds.

I have been through enough of them.

Best of luck. I know that you will keep us updated.

I had my first surgery a few years back .. ( 6) .. for gall bladder removal .. and the sleep part was fascinating  in the realm that I felt the moment I woke up .. I had no sense of time  lost ..
...was it minutes or hours/ days ?
and this  blackout was instantaneous .. so the old 'count backwards from 100 "  .. 99.. out ! .,  so fast I feel that I have nothing to worry about when the time comes for my own demise .. I had no aching hangover/ no headache  and the grogginess was pleasing  pleasant for the minutes following the wake up .

bottom line .. nothing to worry about and I now know why Michael Jackson  preferred this  to other drugs ..

Yesterday the doctor's office called.... the person having surgery before me had to reschedule. So they moved up my surgery. Still the same day... but now I have to be there for prep at 7am (instead of 8:30) and surgery scheduled for 9am (instead of 10:30).

At least I don't have to go as long without eating and drinking something. All I allowed to have that morning is my blood pressure medicine with just a sip of water... they want nothing on my stomach when they put me under.

They already have me not taking my daily aspirin or my arthritis medicines as they are blood thinners and they want to be sure they are all out of my system.

My surgery is now only 5 days away.

Good Luck Pete! Seems that you have a common football injury without actually playing! The good news is that they do tons of these and it should be relatively straight forward.

I twisted my knee a few months back playing sports, but thankfully it recovered by itself.

OK... this time tomorrow I will be getting up and ready to go to the hospital for my operation. So I admit it... I am feeling very nervous at this point. I also will be home alone the entire day... so to keep my mind off things I plan to watch lots of TV. I must keep my mind occupied! Usually when I feel this way I tend to stress eat. I eat and eat all day long and never feel like I am getting full. I hope that won't be the case for me today... but prepared for it all the same.

Tomorrow I get up at about 5:30 to get ready... Leave here between 6 and 6:15... they will start prepping me for the surgery at 7am and the operation itself is at 9am.
