Since I took the time to look up Writers Guild of America's Television Credits Manual for another thread, I thought I might share what they say about "Created by" and "Developed by".

I'm not saying that this has any bearing on if or how they should be credited in Profiler. I just thought that some of you might be interested in the definitions. So here they are:

“Created by”
A “Created by” credit shall be given on each episode of an episodic
series or serial to the writer when such writer has separated rights and is
entitled to sequel payments under the terms of the MBA. The Company
may contract to give such credit to any writer, but such contract shall
provide that in the event another writer is determined to be entitled to
such credit, as provided above, that writer shall be given a “Developed
by” credit or other similar credit.

“Developed by”
A “Developed by” or “Developed for Television by” credit shall be given
only to a person who has contributed to the writing of the program,
series or episode involved. As a general rule, a “Developed by” credit
would be granted to that writer who has contributed significantly to the
series’ distinctiveness and viability, but not enough to warrant a “Created
by” credit. It is up to the arbiters to determine whether or not it is appro-
priate to award “Developed by” to the writer proposed for such credit by
the Company.

I have often wondered why 'we' chose to track one and not the other.  I mean, I know why 'we' chose to track one, I am just not sure why 'we' chose not to track the other one.

We do need to have 'Developed by' added as an option to the 'Writing' credits block.

I too believe we need to track this, as often the creator of the piece isn't responsible for bringing it to Television or the cinema.

Agreed.  It is not equivalent to any of the credits we track, so it has to be local only.

So, a "created by" credit to an author who is credited with "developed by"  is too much, as you pointed out (and confirmed by reading the whole section on http://www.wga.org/content/default.aspx?id=177).

However, in the absence (again) of a proper choice in Profiler, we have to choose the lesser of two evils. Giving a "screenwriter" credit instead of "developed by" is not enough, hence it is also an inadequate credit.

IMO, if it is impossible to give the proper credit, one should give more rather than less.

(The debate is resurging because of a new contribution on "The Walking Dead" developed by Frank Darabont). It is proposed to replace the incorrect "Created by" by an equally incorrect "screenwriter". I voted no.)

You should check the credits again and the contribution in question before you post here.

There is an on-screen credit for Frank Darabont for "Teleplay By" which is the functional equivalent of "screenwriter". There is already a credit in the existing profile for this as well. The contributor is NOT adding a "screenwriter" credit for Frank Darabont...it's already there in the existing profile. He is removing an invalid credit for "Created By" because the on-screen credit is "Developed By" and "Created By" is not the functional equivalent of "Developed By". Unfortunately DVD Profiler does not track "Developed By" at this time...although I wish it did.

Agreed on all counts. Adding a developed by option would be nice.

Here is the contribution in question.

You are right but the effect of the contribution is still to give Darabont a lower role that the one he had and the problem remains.

I understand from all replies above that everybody wishes that a "developed by" credit be added to Invelos.

In the meantine however (and that was my reason to post here), am I to understand from those replies that the consensus is to give the lesser of two credits when the actual credit cannot be entered and falls between two existing credits?

Is that how he's listed in the credits, last I mean? If so, then that's how he's profiled.

No. If it cannot be entered, it cannot be entered.
