I have a question about audio tracks. This is something I seldomly ever touched before so wasn't sure how to handle... and I see no guidance in the rules.. Here is the audio options menu...

I was wondering what we do in the case of DTS 6.1....

When I select DTS I see the options for...

- Mono
- 2 Channel Stereo
- 4.0
- 4.1
- 5.0
- 5.1

I don't have a set-up for DTS on my computer... so when I choose it... I get no sound... but in the display (PowerDVD 6.0)... it shows as Audio: DTS 5.1

So can I guess that the 6.1 on the menu is a misprint and it is really 5.1 to be put in the profile? Or is there a 6.1?... and if there is such a thing how do we handle it in profiler?

I am not 100% confident in the powerDVD here since I have such an old version.

For the record the DVD is Top Gun (I Love the '80s version).

I must say my initial reaction is to put it through with DTS 5.1 since that is what the display in PowerDVD said and there is no such listing as DTS 6.1 in profiler.

My Top Gun has DTS-HD MA 6.1 on Blu-ray. There is DTS ES 6.1 on Profiler, could it be that?

I think Pistol is correct.

Quote:
SOUND: Paramount presents "Top Gun" in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 6.1. The DTS presentation is DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete. Completely curious about how the DTS 6.1 effort would fare, I listened to that first, then went back to compare the Dolby Digital option. I was quite surprised at the sound quality of a film that will hit its 20th birthday in a few years. Surrouns are locked and loaded throughout the proceedings, with a lot of strong effects and solid ambience present during many scenes. Plane flyovers sound stellar and the action scenes really roar through the room. The other element that kicks into high gear is the 80's soundtrack; despite being a tad dated, it still fits the film perfectly and sounds marvelous here, filling the room. The DTS-ES 6.1 presentation really offers an enveloping experience, as the rear back surround is engaged quite well during the action scenes and to deliver the score.

Plus this site lists it as DTS-ES.

I don't know... there is nothing that says DTS ES on the DVD or on the display... but I guess it is possible.

What other programs do you all use for finding out Audio Tracks?

Here's another review:

Quote:
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 EX (448Kbs) and DTS 6.1 ES (Discrete) (754Kbs). The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is not EX flagged. As with the video transfer, the audio been treated to a complete remix which improves over the old mix in a few key areas. It must be said, however, that the original soundtrack was never too shabby thanks to the existence of a 70mm print 6-track audio mix. The first time the new mix really makes itself known is when we first hear Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone kick in at the start of the film. The vocals have been mixed far more prominently into the centre than before - a definite improvement in my opinion. The next improvement is in the effects. The direction of the effects are now far more apparent. With the old mix, I found the effects tended to get lost with their placement in the room a little less defined. The last major improvement is in the LFE channel - the bass is now tighter and better defined in both mixes but more so with the DTS - less woofy would probably be the best way to describe it. Finally, it's also worth noting the old mix was 384Kbs - we can now enjoy the audio of Top Gun with full-range definition, something which only the music really benefits from.

Thanks! Also... not sure how I forgot about this site... but also found it at DVDCompare.Net

Which lists my version as...

English DTS-ES 6.1 (discrete)
English Dolby Digital 5.1 EX
English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround
French Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround

Thanks for the help!

I can't say for sure, since I don't have that particular disc, but I would be surprised if it wasn't the same. Most of those I Love the 80s movies were just repackaged from previous releases.

FWIW...I popped my copy of the Top Gun Special Collector's Edition DVD in my player and chose the English 6.1 DTS Surround option and my Onkyo TX-NR708's display shows it as DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete and there is a check box in DVD Profiler for that.

Yeah... I had to go to DTS ES which I didn't think of since it didn't say that on the PowerDVD display (or disc menu).

As far as I know 6.1 is always "DTS ES" in either matrixed or discrete format.

The only other option is if the menu is incorrect. I wouldn't trust PowerDVD that much... Btw I have only used that program a few times. Looks ugly. But there are others, I'd believe, which are more reliable for finding out sound formats.

What programs do you recommend? Can they tell the difference between 2.0 Mono and 2.0 Stereo? A hard thing to figure out - unless the track sounds obviously stereo to my ears.
