I came across this credit in an end credit.

Sterling Mossman & The Gang

When I try to put it all in the first name field I get:
Sterling Mossman & The Ga

Since it won't fit into one field is it ok to divide it up so it looks like the credit?

Such as
Sterling Mossman// & The Gang

IMHO not, because it's more of a stage name. "Sterling Mossman" is not a first name, "The Gang" is not a surname.

IMO, yes, that is what I would do. I also saw it done recently on Ferris Bueller and voted yes. I would rather have the whole name mis-parsed than just part of a name.

Yes it is - there's no other way to retain the full on-screen credit.

I agree with Sam and T!M.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Rules :

In addition to the above, the following rules should be followed:

    * If an actor name is only a first name or stage name enter it entirely in the first name field. Examples are Cher, Madonna, Cedric the Entertainer & Queen Latifah.

We have to follow rules. This is not the first time that following rules make us enter a name that is not exactly as on screen (generally we alter all caps names), with a result that does not match reality.

We did that so many times, so why would we violate rules in this case, though we follow them strictly in other cases?

When we do have not enough space to enter a role, we live with that. Correct action is to follow rules and request a change for the program in the proper forum.

Locally I'd enter it as divided entry "Sterling/ /Mossman" and "The Gang/ /" and maybe use the "credited as"-function...

Except in this case this ain't possible. "Sterling Mossman & The Ga" isn't according the rules either. A solution could be:
Sterling//Mossman [Sterling Mossman & The Gang]

Each time the field is too short, we have the same problem. Not a reason to violate rules.
And I do not see why "Sterling Mossman & The Ga" is more "wrong" than "Gerard Depardieu" that we accept to follow rules. If you want to consider the level of "wrongness", where do you draw the line where rules may be violated ???

Could you stay on-topic please. Don't ruin topics with your campaign against converting capital letters into just what you see on screen without cultural context, thank you.

One name field won't solve the issue of not enough characters if the name exceeds the space allocated for names in the database.

Another reason to follow rules :

If we don't, with several profiles with this actor, we could have :
Sterling/ Mossman/& The Gang
Sterling/ Mossman &/ The Gang
Sterling Mossman/&/The Gang
Sterling Mossman// & The Gang
Sterling Mossman &//The Gang
Sterling Mossman &/The/ Gang

easy for  linking, sorting and searching functions

That's okay, we have enough characters as it is right here in the forums.

Personally i choose to start the last name field with the word that got cut of. Maybe for clarity sake this should be added to the rules? (or another option some may have!)

So in the OP's example i'd go Sterling Mossman & The//Gang

Of course a single name filed, with enough space, would solve all these problems!
