I just picked this up in my shop.  We deal exclusively in used DVDs, so one of my co-workers bought it from someone.

I suspect it may be a bootleg, but there is an outside chance it is a legit import release.

Battle Royale II: Requiem
The UPC is 876543252561
The package indicates the MC as "HK Video (Taiwan) Co." (exactly as given on package)
It is region 0

It is 2-disc, with disc 1 being the feature and disc 2 being a set of special features (production stills, trailers, character profiles, featurettes, and others).

The front and side give the title in foreign characters, not in the English alphabet.  However the package has an overview in English, and indicates Japanese audio and English subtitles.

It is currently in the database as US locality, which I know is incorrect whether it is a bootleg or a legit release.

So, do you guys think it's a bootleg?  Or do you think it's a legit import (possibly a Taiwan release?)?

And what should I do about the incorrect profile in the database?

It looks like a bootleg to me (I am pretty sure that HK Video (Taiwan) is a bootlegger label through previous purchases), but I wouldn't completely dismiss it unless you can prove it 100%.  The US locality, however, would be completely incorrect.  It needs to be switched to Taiwan if anything.  I would definitely delete the US profile.

I don't have personal knowlege of this, but I just read a post on another forum that talks about this particular movie. Perhaps you could contact them and see if yours matches their bootleg?  I found it here.  It's the post by Cheato, post #13.

There are multiple versions of the film out there (I have the release from Hong Kong -- terrible movie, BTW, a stain on the first one), there was no U.S. release, just like there wasn't for the first film.  It might even be a bootleg of the Hong Kong release, which also has 2 discs.

I can't say clear it is a bootleg, but some things look a bit strange.

876543252561 is used by another release of HK Video (Taiwan) Co.. (Some kind of standard UPC?  )

Not very typical is also the DVD-5.

MEPG 2 ???

http://www.library.yorku.ca/find/Record/1720128 -> video recording, Video CD?? Sure it is really a DVD?

From authoring custom dvds and vcds of my own, I can say for a fact that:

MPEG 1 is VCD, and MPEG 2 is dvd. It's like that in Nero at least, I doubt they use any exclusive technology.

Of course any bootleg wanting to stand a chance of standing up as real will be dvd first and formost.
A sure-fire clue to look for, what color is playing surface? Purple or blue and you're in boot city, silver or gold and at least it's a factory pressed boot (if it is a boot, but I'm pretty sure most Korean boots are pressed nowadays).

MPEG 2 yes, but the back cover states MEPG 2. (It was not a typo by me  ) I think even Korean, Taiwan, or whatever: In serious releases they wouldn't make such mistakes.

You'd think!

Edit: as to the original question, I agree with the others - create a Taiwanese profile and delete the US one. Without having clear evidence for or against it being a bootleg, I think it better to err on the side of caution and assume it's genuine.

So I was doing some research while I was at work today, and it looks like this is a bootleg of the Japanese release.  I found it listed as Ctenosaur/Cannibal King Bootleg at this site.  The cover matches perfectly the one shown.

So I seem to have a bootleg of BRII to match my two different bootlegs of the first film.  Sigh.  I really, really wish someone would get around to an R1 release!

As far as disc color, they're silver.

How do I flag the current profile for deletion?

Doesn't look like that will ever happen.  Apparently, Toei wanted a huge amount for the US rights.  Add to this that most companies are squeamish about a film in which teenage kids murder each other for sport and the fact that so many copies have flooded the country through bootlegs and imports.  The second film also adds a ton of US bashing, which doesn't actually help its cause.

Change the title to something like "SCREENERS: PLEASE MARK THIS TITLE FOR DELETION" and explain in the notes why.

Unfortunately (and I realized that myself only by being duped in the first place), Hong Kong, China and Taiwan are infested with many bootlegs of Japanese movies, anime and tokusatsu series. I once even bought a box set and could clearly tell they just downloaded TV encodes off Winny (a Japanese p2p), remastered it into a MPEG-2 stream and dumped it onto a DVD with a simple menu ... I could clearly still see the artifacting and macroblocking from the original encode released on Japanese P2P.

Shameful, really. Ever since I've stopped buying such Asian releases and instead either buy from US lincense holders or import directly from Japan.

They even go as far as recycling barcodes from older US and European releases. I believe my box set of Captain Tsubasa movie collection had the same UPC as a US movie from '70s

I've rarely bought bootlegs intentionally (there are cases when I can't find a film anywhere in the world online with English subtitles, so I've broken down and just bought from a dealer), but some bootleggers seem to be getting better and better at making them indistinguishable from the real thing.  Factory pressed, reflective covers, even double-layered...it's quite difficult to tell at times.  That's why I stick to the websites I know and trust.

I think I may've just bought a bootleg, but I couldn't find anything that looked legit (besides way over-priced R3, which is probably just a different bootleg). Here's what I bought:
http://cgi.ebay.com/PARADISE-DVD-Willie-Aames-Phoebe-Cates-Sealed-/180515769346?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_DVD_HD_DVD_Blu_ray&hash=item2a07940c02

UPC 8809097758618

There's about 3 different versions of this film in the DB that either R1 or region free, and all look to be boots. Even the cover I was looking for I saw on dvdpriceserach, it's in the DB but not as R1, as a region free from Korea.

The scans for the cover I just bought look really nice, so at least they did a good job on the printing if fake. I just hope the video quality is up to par, this has some very important nudity from Phoebe Cates.

I'll be back with more thoughts when I get the disc. I'm weary ordering from Korea which is why I only gambled $5. The "we can't provide a tracking number" in description has me edgy and thinking I might get beat, but I want to see this flick so I went for it!

Why should it be a bootleg? The seller writes it is not a bootleg.

The one you ordered seems to be this. Seems to be the region free from Korea in DB.

Bootleg or not, I don't know. Guess would be it's not a boot.
