I really hate parsing opening credits, and figuring out what category a particular company name goes in.

I suspect that it should be possible to produce a listing of names that would help in that, if you saw this name, it was almost always a "media company" versus something else.

Like:

"20th Century Fox Home Entertainment"

is almost always a media company ....

"Fox Searchlight Pictures"

is / can be a studio / production company.

While I'm at it ...

XYX Productions / XYZ Studios = Studio??

And about the 1,2,3 precedence.

It seems to me that the production company most involved in the day to day making of the movie should be listed first.

No?

Many thanks.

It is - always. Although keep in mind that there's no such thing as "20th Century Fox Home Entertainent" - it's "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment".

Indeed. "Fox Searchlight Pictures" can be either the theatrical release studio, or the production company (or both, in which case you wouldn't list it twice, but just once).

These are generally the production companies.

No. Per the contribution rules, not the production company, but the theatrical release studio gets listed first. So when the credits say: "FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES present an XYZ PRODUCTIONS film", then you enter "Fox Searchlight Pictures" first (theatrical release studio), "XYZ Productions" second (production company), and (assuming that is indeed the media company) "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment" as media company.

I have always understood that you enter the studios in the order they appear on the film.

So if the film credits say "STUDIO Z presents, in association with STUDIO Y and STUDIO X, a STUDIO A production" you list STUDIO Z, STUDIO Y and STUDIO X, and since there are only 3 slots you sadly cannot enter STUDIO A.

If this is wrong, please let me know.

That's right, but there is a ranking. The rules tell us to add the theatrical release studio(s) first and then followed by the production studio(s). In some films the theatrical release studio is credited at the end of the end credits, something like: "Distributed by STUDIO B" or "Released by STUDIO B".

From the rules:

List the Studios in the following priority.

  • Theatrical Release Studio(s)

Indeed. And per the rules, we then still list enter that theatrical release studio in the first slot, even if that means bumping the third production company shown in the opening credits.

What if there is 2 theatrical releasing studios?  What if there is 3?

I personally will enter at least 1 production studio so that in cases of 2 or more theatrical releasing studios,

    Theatrical releasing studio 1
    Theatrical releasing studio 2
    Production studio 1

Of course, locally we can choose to do anything we want, but for the online database, the rules say that theatrical release studios are to be listed first.

I think the rules are open to some interpretation.  It gives priority to theatrical releasing studios, but not at the exclusion of production companies.  I hate to use common sense for DVD Profiler, but primary production company takes precedence over third theatrical releasing studio IMO.

For most US films, the order they are listed in the credits, will be the proper order for them to be entered into Profiler...especially when formatted like your example.

I will have to disagree with you here.  The rules tell us to...

List the Studios in the following priority.
  • Theatrical Release Studio(s)

  • Production Company(s)

  • There is no ambiguity there.  We list the release studio(s) first, as they have the highest priority, then, if there is room, production studio(s).

I have to agree with the Martian here... It seems pretty straight forward to me... the rules even shows that it could be possible multiple studios...

List the Studios in the following priority.
    Theatrical Release Studio(s)

      Production Company(s)

I may remember this slightly wrong, but my recollection of how this rule came about, and I was a pretty big proponent, was that we list Theatrical releasing studio, Primary production studio, and DVD distributor in that order.  One each for 3 studio slot.  When Ken added a separate studio category for DVD distributing studio, that allowed for multiple theatrical releasing studios to be added.  I don't think the intent of the studio rules was ever to exclude primary production studio in lieu of third theatrical releasing studio.

OK, so here's the deal for me.

Sometimes there are so many people listed before the ones that actually made the movie that I'm concerned the REAL production company will never show up as credited.

Is that a silly thing for me to be concerned about?
