This issue came up, during a rule discussion in the Rules forum, and I was curious as to what people actually wanted.  These are the suggestions that came up:

Option one - Full open credits
This option would make the crew credits exactly like cast credits where we enter the name and the role.

Option Two - Limited Open Credits
This option would be exactly as above, but with predefined categories that would limit the types of credits we could track.

Option Three - Contributable Custom Roles
This option would keep the existing radio buttons, but allow for the tracking of the actual credit.  At the moment, this is a local only feature.

Option Four - No Changes
Kinda self explanatory.

Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

I am against open credits as I feel that would create to much work.  If we went to full open credits, every profile in the DB would have to be re-audited.  I don't know about anybody else, but that seems like an unreasonable request to me.

What I would prefer, is for Ken to make the Custom Roles field contributable.  If he does that, then those who want to track, and contribute, the actual credit can, while allowing those that don't the ability to keep what we already have.

Personally, I don't think any more credits should be changed until the problems it has are fixed (like a viable option for cast and crew that have shared names, or Asian parsing).

IMO, those are bigger problems than making a change on what crew credits to accept, as it's going to open a door to more debate when there are currently (seemingly) no solutions to the issues at hand.

Now, in the interest of the poll, I did vote for 'limited open'. There are too many crew options now (only IMO), and having open credits would be insane. You'd never have time to verify changes if you had a large collection.

It would be no more work than we had when he first got Crew Credits, Martian. Look at the bright side with Open credits and no more shoehorning, there will be no more arguments over what get shoehorned where or IF, and the only possible changes, once done, would be correcting of typos or similar errors.

We have a half full glass, why not fill it up. Why should i tell some user that believes that the 50 non-original songs and performers are unimportant. Plus with Open credits we can list the data as it actually appears and in the correct order instead of just the Order within the Categories. All I want to be able to do, with Open Credits, is to be able to decide for myself what pieces of data are important to me.

True...except for the fact that it throws away ten plus years worth of work that we have already done.  I, for one, do not want to chuck it all and start from scratch.

But you can do that now, using the 'Other' section, you just have to do the work yourself.

I'm spittin' into the wind but i'd rather have less of almost everything.  Less Sound, less Art.

Or at least a way to filter out the ones i see as wasted space...someone else's diamonds, i know.

Just MHO.

I do like the idea of categorized open credits.

Predifined like

Direction
production
Sound
Cinamatography
Music
Visual Effects
Hair and Makeup

With defined limits of what can be put withinthe groups, Maybe in radio buttons to isolate it down, then custom fields. That way people can contribute the base, and the people that want to do more can...

I agree with the Martian.

I also agree with part of what the other alien said. There are other issues that are higher on the conflict creation scale than those brought up by not having open credits.

Please note I didn't say there are other "more important issues" since important is subjective. What isn't subjective is the post history here in the forums. Very few crew discussions aren't resolved quickly. I can't remember one where we had to contact the person involved to get the issue settled either.

Another disliking open credits.  Keep the universe limited.

I've voted for limited open credits. That would solve all of these "Does X = Y" threads.

IMHO it'd have to be limited open as I doubt that many people want to know who provided the catering or the "The Producers wish to thank" lists.

This.

I just want to track my discs, not write a movie encyclopedia. I was quite happy with the basic crew data we had prior to the recent additions. I don't even feel that I know enough to contribute crew anymore.

I would like to keep the table for normalization of well know crew credits like we do currently but allow custom crew credits to be submitted for crew jobs not covered into their specific category.

No it doesn't, don't exaggerate. We did not have ANY crew beyond Director until FIVE years ago, when Ken setup the system we have NOW. And Open Credits in ANY form would be a VAST improvement over what we have right now. Ten years, you are funny, i will give you credit for that.

And it does not throw away any work, it improves mightily on what we have. Does it mean more work, sure it does.

In your opinion.  I'd like someday to be able to filter films by director, cinematographer, writer, etc. and if we do away with crew categories that will be much more difficult.

I have about zero interest in completely open credits.  The amount of work this would entail is staggering if you think about it.  Of course, there's always the old fantasy that this work is distributed across the entire user population and not just on me.    Yeah, that's why all the profiles out there now are up-to-date.  I'm still running into profiles that are complete scrapes from IMDb and have absolutely no reference to the actual credits.  I'm talking about profiles that aren't current to Profiler 3.0 standards, let alone 3.6.

Whatever option that would add Martial Arts Director is what I would vote for.   I can't believe it's not in the contributable crew list.  There are tons of DVDs that tout Martial Arts Direction by Yuen Wo Ping or Sammo Hung whereas I can't think of one that boldly list the rerecording artist or makeup artist on the DVD tagline.
