When 'Professor Toru Tanaka' comes up as a credit, how are we supposed to put this in?

The rules don't seem to cover 'Professor', 'Doctor' or other such titles. Should these be put in as on-screen or entered as 'Credited As'?

His given name is 'Toru Tanaka' but, on the CLT, the common name is 'Professor Toru Tanaka' by a long way ...

Professor Toru Tanaka=52/197
Prof. Toru Tanaka=8/24
Toru Tanaka=16/91

Latest attempt at addressing this here, although the discussion quickly evolved into the parsing of Ice Cube...

In any case, it has long been decided that titles like 'Professor' and 'Doctor' are entered as part of the name as long as that's what the person's mostly credited as. Since there are far more "Professor Toru Tanaka" entries than there are "Toru Tanaka", "Professor" is to be entered as part of the name here. But whether it's Professor Toru//Tanaka or simply Professor Toru Tanaka// is still open...

CLT:
Professor/Toru/Tanaka: 74 profiles (this is definitely wrong, IMHO)
Professor Toru//Tanaka: 104 profiles
Professor Toru Tanaka//: only 4 profiles.

And there we go: the name variant that scores only 4 (!) hits among the 182 "Professor Toru Tanaka" entries is the correct one. Yeah, the database still needs a lot of work...

Good points about it being a stage name, I hadn't even considered that.

Sorry, T!M, I should have guessed this had already come up before.

Oo. I'm thinking stage name now, as his real name is Charles Kalani NOT Toru Tanaka

If his real name is "Toru Tanaka", then I would treat the "Professor" part as a title and it should be entered in DVDP as "Professor Toru//Tanaka".

I don't see this as a stage name at all.  Stage names are typically different from the person's real name.

I'd enter it entirely in the first name field.

Why the sudden change in your view? Why did you feel it was a stage name back then, and what has changed your mind? We can't keep flipping aroung on these matters for no apparent reason - and I just don't see what new information we have that has suddenly caused you to feel this isn't a stage name anymore. I certainly haven't seen it. As ninehours' Wikipedia-link shows, his real name is Charles Kalani, Jr. and he used "Professor Toru Tanaka" as a stage name.

@reybr: but it is different from his real name, very much so: Charles Kalani, Jr....

But that means we have to start guessing whether an actor is using a stage name in the first place. We have the rule for the "john Wayne" type stage names, that we treat as regular names.

I would opt to include the title in the first name field, as we generally do, but otherwise use the first name/last name parsing.

Actually, there's no such rule. In fact, the rules simply say: "If an actor name is only a first name or stage name enter it entirely in the first name field." Nothing more. But apart from that, "Professor Toru Tanaka" to me is quite different to "John Wayne" - I really wouldn't consider that a "John Wayne" type stage name.

I didn't change my position at all!

I said "If his real name is Toru Tanaka....".

You've quoted a source which says it is not his real name (that is new info to me), therefore, "Professor Toru Tanaka" would be a stage name!

Take a chill pill!

Toru Tanaka is a stage name so according to the rules completely in first field.

But what is with the John Wayne? Also stage name? If he changed his name I would go to handle it as usual name.

I would leave Professor out. Because in my opinion this is not part of the name.
Is it somewhere ruled how to handle titles?

Gerri Cole spoke out on the matter in the forums once. Start with reading this thread (name: "Why do we include job titles, military ranks in actors name fields?") and then follow the links to previous threads for the whole story. So yeah, titles such as this one ARE part of the name - as long as it's the most-credited form, that is.
