I am hoping that someone will be able to enlighten me.  I am not, in general, an image contributor.  I usually only contribute one if the profile is lacking an image altogether.  However, I have twice contributed images to replace - in both cases the images that were originally with the profile had large white spaces to each side of the image.  In both cases I contributed a front cover that lacked these large white spaces, showing only the cover.  I pointed out the large white spaces (and the new image's lack of them) in my contribution notes.  In both cases the profiles and their images received no votes (on either side).  Yet in both cases the profile was approved and the image declined.

Can someone enlighten me as to perhaps why the image was declined, when what it was replacing is so obviously incorrect?  If I had been attempting to replace a good image with a bad image I would understand (it's why I generally don't mess with the images at all), but I've never understood this one and would very much like to.  Should I just not mess with contributing images if they are replacing ones like this?

The first one (which was long ago) has since been replaced by another user with a very nice scan, but the second, the one declined recently, is The Science of Fitness with Tamilee - I Want That Body!: Digital Collector's Edition (743457161428) (long story), if you want to look at the current image with its large white sides.

I contribute alot of images, so far nearly everyone has been accepted.

What did the No voters state ?
Why didn't they like the image ?

Was it maybe a re-release image ?
Was it too heavily cropped maybe ?

It is hard to say if i cannot compare the old one to the one you submitted

cheers

There were no votes - none at all.  No no votes.  No yes votes.  Just no votes.

The image was the same, except lacking the large white spaces on either side of the image.  Absolutely exactly the same.

I just started scanning myself a few days back. So far everything I scanned was approved. But in my case I am starting (learning on) profiles with either no images, only front cover images or thumbnail images.

I know what you are trying to say though... you are replacing images like you see at amazon...

... removing the white border from the sides.

Sounds like screener error to me at least.

Just a hint for amazon pictures (e.g. for pre-releases). The picture above has the address

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PhfxQPiIL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

the number behind the AA is the size of the picture. If you need it bigger, just increase the number. Let's say to 400

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PhfxQPiIL._SL500_AA400_.jpg

If you want the picture without whiter borders, remove everything except the image key

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PhfxQPiIL.jpg

All in all, I'd say this was a simple mistake from the screeners. That's bound to happen once in a while. If you're certain that your scans are a significant improvement - and it sounds like they are - I'd simply try again if I were you.

DJ, I had no idea about those Amazon covers. Thanks for the tip.

I have to agree with T!M on this one. I have had a few scans with no votes at all declined with out explanation before also, I just resubmitted them and most were approved the second time around.

@Danae:

I don't remember ever having an image contribution been declined while the profile got through. The only thing I can think of is that your scan - while being an improvement to the existing one - was done in wrong way anyway, i.e. (in addition to what Donnie suggested) scanning the cover with the case, without removing the cover sheet from the case first.

If you scanned your image without the cover sheet being still in the case, then I'm out of ideas... I think you just need to try again

and @Karsten:

Thanks for the tip! I use Amazon's images every now and then when updating cover info for music in my iTunes. This is very helpful.

It was a screener error, and I have corrected it.

I was about to mention not so much screener error, but screener taste (probably not the right word) or preference.
I just had a few more images declined, and some had all yes votes. The other had 2 no's (total, but both for images in notes) and 20-some yes, with 5 yes noting they love the new scans.
I don't even worry about it anymore, just lock down the local if I like my scans better (not always the case, but usually) and move on to the next audit.

Oh yeah, just read Draxen full post 2 back. I have profiles go through nearly every time the images get declined. As long as the new info in them is good and properly documented, it has no bearing on the scans and the scans have no bearing on profiles.

Amazon images are usually decent, but google searching will usually find you better album covers for iPod or Zune. It will usually find you blogs with the albums to download as well.

Infact I don't remember when I have had my contribution declined, to be honest, if ever. And I certainly would remember if the profile had been accepted while the image contribution declined. I have made some contributions where I have received some no-votes pointing out obvious errors. In those cases I have seen the error myself thanks to the comments and I have withdrawn the contribution. So, in my case, not having contributions declined doesn't mean that I am perfect contributor  , not in the least... I just cover my tracks quickly enough

But it having been a screener error in Danae's case, that settles it nicely, fortunately.

Another on the "to do" list...  it would be nice if the screeners were required to enter a reason for the decline/rejection, and send this via a PM to the submitter automatically.

From what we have been told, this is not going to happen.  The screeners deal with thousands of contributions and they just don't have the time to address each individual one.  When possible, they will use one of the generic replies, but other than that...it isn't going to happen.

Hey now, don't be picking on the Drive-In scans.  I did at least one of those volumes!
