We've prepared a filter to standardize the "jr." suffix.  Currently we have variations of Jnr and jr, with or without comma, with or without period, in various capitalizations.  The filter will alter these to "XXX, Jr.".  It operates on the last name field only and does not affect the Credited As field.  Comments please.

Cool (and not even a Monday!)

So if Robert Downey Jr is credited just like that (punctuation free) it will be converted to Robert Downey, Jr.?

Is that then the legal name though it isn't As Credited?  Or is it simply the common name and we must still utilize the Credited As field to put the punctuation free version (if used in the film credits) on top of it?
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

I can only agree with this change, when CreditedAs is automatically set, when a comma is removed from the last name field.
But in general, I am not so keen on this change. Did you also consider Sr.? And what else is there? Do you really want to cover all possible variations? It just opens up a can of worms, IMO.

Not a bad idea on the CreditedAs automation - I've added that.  Jr is by far more common and is causing a significant splintering of the data, and some ping-ponging.

Thanks!
And of course I meant, that the CreditedAs is set, when a comma is added (not removed) from the last name field. Just to avoid confusion.

I am glad to hear this is getting settled... but I am confused on something here. What exactly are we supposed to do on our end... when credits say...

Credits say:
Robert Downey, Jr.

We Use:
Robert Downey, Jr.

Credits say:
Robert Downey Jr.

We go ahead and put:
Robert Downey, Jr. (Robert Downey Jr.)

As in always use the comma and period for common name now?

sorry if I am being dense... just want to be sure I understand completely.

This was my question above, but you framed it better.

The filter, once implemented, would change a submission of

Robert Downey Jr.

to:

Robert Downey, Jr.
Credited As: Robert Downey Jr.

Like Pete says.

But otherwise a step in the right direction...at least we will all be on the same playing field.

Steve

Now off to scan my local DB...submitting we will go, submitting we will go

Thanks Ken...
So in effect it forces a standard of Robert Downey, Jr.

I am glad it is settled and on the same page now.

It forces a standard for the "Common Name Field" and we continue to enter "Credited As" exactly from the film credits.

This means that in essence, we are to ignore the results of the CLT for all names with a "Jr." (or any variation) suffix.

This is the first positive move in fixing the whole linking system, and is long overdue.  Hopefully, there will be other changes implemented soon to fix the rest of the problem!

Thanks, Ken!

Thanks Ken!

Are there any plans to extend this to other punctuation cases such as -

" Vs '
Having periods between initials Vs no periods?

Now I need a "full text search" capability on the actor filter, so I can fix them all locally!

Yeah... I should have been clearer.. that is how I understand it... and am glad to finally see it. (or anything like it for that matter). In my opinion he should have went ahead and done the same with Sr. as well.

Sr. standardization has been added and both are now active to try out.
