The load time is going to depend on the size of your collection.  The more DVDs you own the slower it will be.  I have a little over 700 movies and it only takes about 5-10 seconds for Profiler to open (depending if it's on my main PC or my laptop; the slower being my laptop).

You could try going into Tools -> Options -> Utilties and running a "Repair DVD Profiler Database".  There are a few options when you run it that will remove unused Cast, Crew, Studios, etc that may reduce your DB size.  Plus, doing the repair may do a general optimization and compaction on the DB (not positive about that but I'd be surprised if it doesn't).  There's also an option in the Utilities to clean up your Images folder to remove un-used images.  I'm not sure if the number or size of images will effect the load time though.

Other than that.. short of getting a faster PC with more RAM, I can't think of much else you can do to speed it up.

Ken said that if you uninstall your plugins, it will speed up startup time.

You can also uninstall DVDP and opt to maintain your data files and then reinstall DVDP without the plugins.

Of course, it's always an excellent idea to back up your collection before doing anything.  And just because.

Hi,

Perhaps this is what you recall:

  http://www.dougweb.org/dvdpro/kb/index.php?title=Main_Page

Under "Tips and Tricks" there are some suggestions regarding speeding up the load time.

Another option might be to ask the developers to improve on the loading.
Since the number of database entries is the cause of the slowdown, it can be improved in a lot of ways.
For instance not all the data has to be loaded right at the start, it can be streamed in or loaded on demand. In case the thumbnails are scaled down from the originl images, those could be cached as well and even be keep in a few images instead of seperated files...

Ken has a posting on this page that has some suggestions on load times.

EDIT  - Ken also said there is information in the FAQ on this. Search for LOAD and you will find it.

Gerri, those information might be nice to speed up the program. But doing anything manual will almost right away leave most of the normal users in the dark and might even cause trouble.

So IMO if really a lot of people are having slow down problem (which I do not know) it might be something to be adressed by improving how data is loaded and managed.

I saw the thumbnails are cached which then made me wonder if all the images, so the big front and back cover, are loaded in at the start of the programm.
Since a database programm requires virtually no CPU time, the time spend must be be spend loading some data.

EDIT: ok, looks like the covers are not loaded until they are needed. However a lot of file access are happening, as if the individual "records" are read out individually instead of reading larger portions of the file. Couse be a cause for the slowdown.

No, the main data load is the file that includes information about the state of the online database.  Simply select which regions you want loaded to reduce this and improve load time.  Nothing manual about it, it is under Tools->Options.

I have been using DVD Profiler for years but the newest versions have been loading so slowly that I feel like I am going to have to find something different. I timed the load time for my Vista computer opening DVDP and it was 178 seconds. Three Minutes! This is completely unacceptable. I don't understand why it takes so long to start up. I have read the FAQ and looked at the forums for suggestions and nothing has helped. I already ran the database repair utility as well as the suggestions in the FAQ. Anyone have any ideas why it is taking 3 minutes to start? I have roughly 1000 profiles between owned and wishlist.

It COULD be Vista. I don't run stopwatches on my program, but I have 4 times what you have and still XP Pro instead of Vista, and maybe it takes a minute.

While it may be Vista, this is a program intended to run under Vista. I would also state that a minute load time is also unacceptable to me.

The problem is also exacerbated by the fact that the eye launch splash screen sits on top of everything else for the 3 minutes and blocks the center of my screen for the entire period of time.

What's the configuration of your computer?

I'm running Vista Home SP1 on an Intel Core 2 DUO 2 GHz with 4 GB of RAM, and with 1400 titles it takes about 15-20 seconds for the program to boot.

Ken is the only one who can say with any authority whether your configuration is to blame for the slow load, but I do know that Vista is a memory hog so if you've got the minimum 1 GB of RAM that Vista requires, perhaps that's the reason.

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app itself?

Another thing you could do is add the "/NoSplash" command line option to your DVD Profiler shortcut. While that won't speed up the program start, you'll at least be able to use the computer for other things while you're waiting.

In case you're unaware of how to do that, follow these steps:

1. Right-click on the DVD Profiler shortcut and select "Properties"
2. In the new window, make sure the "Shortcut" tab is selected at the top.
3. In the "Target" area, add the following at the end of the text that is already there: /NoSplash
4. Make sure there's a space between the text that is there and the /NoSplash portion, also make sure to add the /NoSplash to the right of the " and not to the left.
5. Click OK - you may have to give permission to Windows to complete the change.

Now when you launch DVD Profiler you won't see the splash screen.

First time I've timed it and it took 11 seconds on my Vista machine.

That's on a Quad Core @ 2.67GHz, 2GB ram and just over 3000 in the collection

The beta took about 23 seconds on my Laptop which uses a Turion 64 @ 1.6GHz and 1GB memory.

I do run fairly clean, i.e. very limited in terms of plugins etc...

The other question, apart from machine specs, is are you running anything else that's resource intensive at the same time as opening profiler?

Would the thumbnail or the txt in the Collection List window not make a difference?
