Using the title from the front cover sometimes results in different interpretations from users and hard to find names in the database.

Here are some examples of some well known titles:

I, Robot

Men in Black II

Mission: Impossible III

Pi

Simone

Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Terminator 2

X-Men 3: The Last Stand

Quoting Rules:

Use the title from the front cover.

In order to create a consistent database with easy to find names I like to know the preference of everybody in order to advice Ken (the owner) to amend the above rule.

[X] Use the spine and translate symbols using common sense, the front cover, the credit block and other sources.
Should the spine contain no title, continue to the front cover and apply the same rules (especially common sense).

The title from the Film's credits" is not always equivalent to "original title".

Yes, it is one of the ways to get the original title (according to the rules).

The reason I am opposed to this is that you have to add an exception for non-english localities at once.

I try to find a general way without having (too much) exceptions from the start.

Take it from the front cover (with all the pro and con arguments shoveled back and forth numerous times already) and in the rare cases (and they are rare compared to the total number of available DVDs) use common sense.

If unsure, come to the forums, start a 20 page thread, then throw in a couple of polls and then do what you want locally and lock it down.

Makes sense to me. You still have contribution notes votes and screeners for exceptions. eg Title taken from front cover OR Title taken from elsewhere as the cover is clearly non standard because .....

You both make abolute sense to me and while I agree in principle with the both of you I'd still favour the spine.

Why? Because I think it's more likely to find a well-formatted title on the spine, it's more likely that there's no tagline that could be interpreted as subtitle and I think most of us have our DVDs ordered in a way where the spine is the only readable part of the entire cover.

I agree. Take it from the front cover. Use the 'Original Title' field for the title from the movie credits or the copyright notice if it differs from the title on the front cover.

you could amend the title rule:
1. If no sensible title on the front cover take it from the dvd spine cover
2. If no sensible title on the dvd spine cover take it from the back cover
3. If you can't figure the title out start a discusion in the Contribution forum
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.
