| | Posted: | | | | Only 40 characters? Damn. With the restart of the database allowing changes to things like the length allowed in the DVD title, I figured some of the more restrictively sized fields had been relaxed a bit. As it is,
Episode 13: More Deadly Than the Sword
would be 39 characters out of 40 (used 13 to get around the point of whether to use leading 0's). Something like "Extraordinary Works of Legerdemaine" would be 35 characters in the title itself, and a prefix of just "13. " would put you almost at the limit. I have at least a couple series where the episode title would go well beyond a 40 character limit (think of titles like those used in the chapters of the book "Around the World in 80 Days").
I suppose 40 characters is fine for up to about 4-5 average words, and I think most series use just 1-3 words in the episode title. Still, it changes the perspective of how to vote when it's not merely about aesthetics and clarity.
Edit: To illustrate for those unfamiliar with "Around the World in 80 Days", a long title from Genshiken:
"Concerning Whether Explanation is Obligatory Under Special Circumstances"

I Prefer just plain Episode 1, Episode 2 and so on.

I also think that according to the rules the Disc (DVD) is the authority for the info that gets submitted to the database. I have TV sets for Example, 24 Season 1 the Disc's do not say Episode 1 etc. it says 12: a.m. -1:00 a.m. another Example is Seinfeld you click episodes on the disc and it doesn't say 1,2,3 etc. It says "The Contest" "The Parking Spot" Etc. IMO the Dividers should reflect exactly what the Disc says. If the Disc says Episode 1: "Episode Name" then that is how is should be submitted. |

| | Posted: | | | | In addition to Matty's example of 24, there are things like Serial Experiment Lain's "Layer 01", and Evangelion where the episodes are numbered like "0:1". I think it may be better to refine a set of rules to describe the process rather than try to force a single rule to fit all cases. I'm more inclined now to say, in order of precedance:
1) If the show displays a prefix for the episode number and/or a specially formatted number, enter the prefix and number as displayed in the show, followed by a colon and episode name, if appropriate.
EG: "Layer 01: Weird"
EG: "12:00 a.m. - 1:00 a.m"
2) If no such prefix is provided, but an episode name is, enter the episode names as an ordered list.
EG: "1. Welcome to the First Episode"
EG: "2. Onward Through the Show"
EG: "3. More Deadly Than the Sword"
2a) If there are multiple seasons contained within a single entry, format the number as #x##, where the first digit is the season number.
EG: "1x24. More Deadly Than the Sword Cliffhanger"
EG: "2x01. More Deadly Than the Sword Resolution"
3) If the episodes are not individually named or otherwise identified, simply enter "Episode 1", "Episode 2", etc. If there are multiple seasons in the entry, enter as "Season 1, Episode 1". |

| | Posted: | | | | I've done two sets in the last couple of days which have no episode titles (Hotel Babylon and Primeval); that being the case I just went with "Episode n". Elsewise I'd probably go with "n. Title", no leading 0, to match the most common episode list format from the overview. |

| | Posted: | | | | Another problem I have with listing the episode title is that it clutter up the cast member list when you trying to find a actor to add to the cast list for the dvd. Stop and edit a movie and look at the cast list on the left side of the screen. What a bunch of crap that is already added to the list of actors. What is it going to look like after adding several hundred episodes to the Database. We need to think quick before the hole thing is a real mess.
