Release date predictions tend to get software developers in trouble.

I hear ya there....

I personally need to adopt the Scotty method of estimation.  Multiple your estimates by four so when you complete it in only a quarter of the time, you're seen as a miracle worker.

Amazing Stuff Ken - really looking forward to all of these (except mobile... because well.... i have an iPhone)

I would think the release order should be:

Mobile (since you gave the timeframe)
DPO Plus
iPhone
3.6

I say this because we just had a software refresh a few months ago, and I think most people were expecting DPOP before that... plus I'm sure the additional revenue stream items would need to come first...

As far as pricing the iPhone app... I see no reason why it shouldn't be the same price as the WinMo version...

oh and... if you need iPhone beta testers... count me in.

Only problem is I'm a tweaker by nature and tend to work towards announced goals.

The iPhone market is a strange beast.  The only way many of the apps survive without a larger price and/or subscription fee is that the average use period for each user is very short, even for paid apps.  It's a risk to launch with a one-time fee.  If the users keep using it for year after year, the server costs can easily surpass the original income.  But, I believe a subscription fee is the kiss of death in the iPhone market.  Very likely it will launch with a nominal one-time fee (likely less than mobile), and we will monitor the situation closely.

One pricing model is to provide free updates of point releases but charge for major (full point) releases.  But the app store doesn't allow for multiple versions that I'm aware of so that would annoy users having the app but not wanting to upgrade, always seeing that (1) on the App Store icon....

Another option would be to charge a larger fee for the initial download but smaller fees for any updates.  But again, I haven't seen evidence of the app store supporting this.  Pity because it would provide a continual trickle of funds.

Personally, I fully plan on having the DVDP iPhone icon on my first page and a permanent fingerprint over it.

Just read your plan on charging less for the iPhone app than mobile.  Apple is already going to cut your left foot off by taking 30% of the take, no point in cutting your right foot off too.

As far as I am informed, you can't charge for upgrades in the Appstore. However, there is no problem in having multiple versions like a light and a Pro version if that's what you mean?

By the way, it would be cool if you made a (nearly) free version for the iPhone that could just work as a collection viewer. Then your friends could keep up to date on the latest arrivals in your collection.

You can only charge once for an app in the appstore as far as I know. All updates have to be free. The only way around is, to use different app names. This is why there are so many "Lite" versions. These are the trial versions which charge nothing. As the appstore does not allow simple updates with costs (upgrades), the developer of these apps drop the "Lite" from the name for the full version. But actually these are handled as two different apps in the appstore.

Sweet idea!  (Not said but it would have to support multiple collections to be of real use). It would also allow for two classes of users, those who only want to view their collection (preventing against purchasing duplicates) and those who want to update their collection.

iDVDP and iDVDP Pro for example.

DPO Plus
  • Developed in Adobe Flex Builder 3

  • Flash-based access to your DVD Profiler Online account in real-time

  • Make direct changes to your collection (add/remove/move/personalize, etc)

  • Features and interface designed to be used from normal PCs and HTPCs

  • This will be a subscription service, with a very nominal yearly fee

  • Future releases of this service will incorporate more and more of the desktop features

  • This sounds great but what about those of us who don't need online interaction but just a decent online presentation. Do we have to pay for this to see any kind of improvement over the current situation or do you (hopefully) plan to improve the standard online collection view too. It's desperately in need of:

    a) working boxset trees
    b) option to use original title instead of local title

I also somewhat agree with Sugarjoe. While it might not be as rewarding and more challenging the priority shouldn't be releasing 3.6 with another set of new things but instead fixing the urgent horrible problems with the current rule set and data fields. Have you even noticed that long-time users (some among the top contributors) are leaving the ship!? This is not good. The recent "discussions" (battles would be more fitting) are worse than ever before and lead absolutely nowhere because the community needs you (or someone representing you) to enforce certain things and clear things up.

I agree with you and Sugarjoe. I think we have some major forum problems that need addressing.

The reputation system is a placebo at this point. It could use some real teeth! The addition of letting users comment as to why they're voting negatively would help. The current negative feedback levels still allow for a user to hurl epithets for several days before being silenced even for just 24 hours.

Ken has taken a step today with a very important issue by posting here. A few more fine points clarified by Ken would help. If he could start doing them in real time, as he did today, things will go well.

Back to Ken's topic: I'm very happy to see the iPhone app coming! My PDA is dying and while I covet an iPhone, I came thisclose to buying a new PDA on Friday because I didn't want to give up DVDP Mobile.    Now I can get an iPhone. yay!

I think that these changes sound good & I await the 3.6 details in due course

I do however agree with others who feel that existing problems on the forums & with the rules should also be addressed.

Looking forward to the new mobile version the most.  Can't wait for the proposed changes to be posted    Major for me would be support for tags, multiple DBs and the ability to add a watched event to an ordered profile (although the last one is made obsolete if multiple DBs are added.

And I hope the iphone version works out for you!

Lot of great news!  I'm so happy for the iPhone app and for DPO Plus too. Even if I don't know I will use it a lot I will subscribe of course, to thank Ken for all his work!

Now I need just to wait but it's not the easiest thing
