I wanted to give him a good vote, but I've run out for the day.

Well, in that case you can always fall back to the rewards system I have implemented on my website.

I don't think I'm alone here but I think this whole reputation system is a disastrous mistake and I'm surprised that Ken is party to it. It may be after the fact but we're all entitled to our opinions, at least I still think we are.

I'm not immediately aware of any other website/forum that traffics in this kind of stuff but mark these words, we will live to regret going down this path.

For those of you eagerly engaging in its implementation, knock yourselves out and have fun I guess.

I thought that at first ... but I think that what it WILL do is calm down some of the posts. I think people will still be able to disagree with something or someone ... but will think twice about just lashing out. It will make them try to get their point across in a civil manner ... something that is not too much to ask.

I still do not understand why some folks believe that this system will prevent people from expressing their opinion.

It seems to me that Ken has made it very clear that there is no intention on the part of Invelos to stifle any opinion and that anyone who attempts to use the system to punish another user simply for stating an opinion that differs from theirs by handing out negative marks, would  wind up having those negative marks attached to themselves.  A pretty good deterrent of abuse, I would think.

The system, as designed and implemented, will only have a negative impact on those who are incapable of expressing their opinions without belittling, name-calling or otherwise being rude to other members of the community.  How can that be considered to be a disastrous mistake?

There may be some trepidation at the moment at the thought of getting a "bad" mark.  This may cause some to decide to stay quiet, and that would be unfortunate, but that is a personal choice and not one being imposed on anyone.

It will cause others to carefully select how they express themselves when they do decide to post and think about how others will perceive their words.  Not only is that a good thing, but it is also a way for folks to improve their communication skills which can help them in all aspects of their lives.

Personally, I have not handed out a single negative mark yet and only a few positives.

I think the system has already had a tremendous positive influence and will continue to do so.

Kudos again, Ken.

Everybody is entitled to their opinions.  We are not, however, entitled to be insulting and demeaning while expressing it.  That is what this system is designed to pevent.

As I have said before, I am a professional moderator...meaning I get payed to moderate forums.  The last company I worked for was MAXIS.  No 'official' company forum, that I know of, allows the kinds of posts that I have seen in this forum.  This is the on-line face of invelos, I am surprised it took this long.

I do like your idea of only forum posters getting to hand out votes.  If you don't take part in the forums, then you really have no concept of the consequences of your voting.  I like it.

the other suggestion of course is to not allow rating of votes on submissions. (and only allow it on the forums (proper).

It would also be nice if the first time somebody goes to the forums after a change like this to the forum software they got a pop up explaining the new changes.

I don't really agree with this Mark. Some people probably come and read the forum everyday, but they don't post or participate for any reasons. I have an active participation on this board, but not at every place where I am a member. By exemple on one forum where I am a member since 2003, I've made only 10 post maximum and I read it everyday and I'm perfectly up to date on its rules.

Just to say that even if someone don't post he/she know about the system and its consequence.

I think you have made a good point here.

Not everyone WILL post in here. But like you said many do indeed visit and read the posts religiously.

To take away their right to vote would be descriminating against them ... something that should definately be frowned upon.

Mark

I'll probably be buried in negatives for this, but I need to get it of my chest:

No negative vote from me.  Your post sounded well reasoned.

I don't see anything in your comment from the yes vote that I find offensive.  Ken is definitely reviewing negative votes, so if he agrees that it was unwarranted he will remove it.

I don't agree with the option to remove any negative votes depending on whether the contribution is approved or denied though.  The reason for the negative reputation vote should be based on the comment being offensive in some way, not just disagreeing with the contributor.  It doesn't matter whether the voter is right or wrong, it matters how they say it.

So, I voted yes with a comment stating "Okay, we'll take it, even if the SRP is wrong..."

Just a side note: if the SRP was actually wrong, shouldn't you vote No?

Well, maybe I should - but the contribution contained so many other improvements...

Besides according to this statistic IE6 is still used by 1/3 of the users (including myself) and I do not think they are going to switch just to see a blending star.

Our stats are a bit less than half that percentage, and it is shrinking fast.  However, I've added logic to serve GIFs to IE 6 and under, and PNGs to everyone else.

What I think maybe should happen when something like this is introduced is maybe a blanket email out to the members to direct them to the new feature.

I agree. I think each time, Ken opens a new thread in the Announcement forum, the opening post should be sent out via email to all users. And those who do not want to receive such mail just have to disable the "Keep me up to date with Invelos news and software updates." under MyProfiler->Subscriptions.

Now that's a good idea.  Hell of a lot of email, but only once in awhile.  BBS's did that sort of thing for years before the internet ever came along.  In fact, on my BBS, my users had to manually click past the discussion group rules in order to participate.  Nobody got away with saying I never read the rules, etc.

There's a nice checkbox in the subscriptions section on this website which should keep us up to date, but it does not seem to work.
