I only try to understand... and hope that anybody could explain me the technical reason or - if not technical - the reason why a screener or someone else did that.

I had a load of initial contributions, more than 40 profiles, all contending the phrase "as told by" in the title. And most of them had that phrase in exactly that spelling on the cover. Well, some have "As told by" and some only with capital letter ("AS TOLD BY"), but I get back title updates for all..... now "as Told by".

So as I get the updates, I have to block them for each and every title - and you can imagine that I like to know how this happens. Especially: How I could avoid that the next time.

Yeah, I know you will tell me that I don't need to accept the update, I know that! But as all those profiles are initally contributed, nobody else than either the database here or the screener is responsible for a change which makes no sense. And: Checking and blocking 40+ updates is unneccessarily invest of time.

If you will read the contribution rules regarding Titles you will see that an automatic capitalization filter is applied, and there is a capitalization tool that will show you how a particular title will be contributed to the database.  There was much discussion on the topic in years past.

Well, I've been there before and the result is completely different (that was the reason for this thread). If I enter "as told by" there, I get back "As Told By", so this tool can't be the reason for.

Yes, because the initial character is always returned upper case. If you enter "story as told by" you will get "Story as Told By".

I just entered one of your titles, "The History of the ECW 1994 as told by Shane Douglas", and it came back as "The History of the ECW 1994 as Told by Shane Douglas".

As scott said, after much debate, we settled on the AP standard which indicates that the following words should not be capitalized:

  • Articles (a, an, the)

  • Short (fewer than 5 letters)

  • Coordinating Conjunctions (and, but, for)

  • Prepositions (at, by, from, etc.)
  • No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Do I have to understand that "logic" behind? Especially as there is no capital letter in most of the titles. And: This seems to be only for english titles? As the german ones are kept as they are written on the cover?

    No, not necessarily.

There's an automatic contribution filter for some English-language localities, which actually forces the "correct" capitalization, no matter how "wrong" you may have capitalized it in your profile. Most localities don't have that filter, but that still doesn't mean titles are "kept as they are written on the cover". Instead, the contribution rules on titles state:

    Quote:
Use capitalization rules common to the language of the title. “Tout va bien” is correctly capitalized. “Tout Va Bien” is not.

So it doesn't matter of the cover says 'tout va bien', 'Tout Va Bien' or even 'tOUT vA bIEN' - we don't just copy the capitalization from the cover into DVD Profiler, but we stick to a standard. For English-language titles, that standard we stick to is the AP standard as outlined in the contribution rules, and there's even a Capitalization Tool for that. For other languages, there are no dedicated tools, but there's still the instruction to use capitalization rules common to the language of the title, instead of merely copying the capitalization from the cover.

  • For the record: From actually *is* capitalized here.
