Sorry for the question, but what is/means API?

Is this something a usual user should know?

Some might have recognized the other thread where I try to get a tool to solve birthyear-problems. So to clean up my database, I am working down this whole list:

http://www.luigifilocamo.it/BY.html

Does anybody know if this list is possibly incomplete or wrong?

Not only to mention, that the data in the profile has a person with wrong birthyear, but according to the list, the birthyear is not even accepted/released!

I am talking about the DVD (7321921121982) and BluRay (5051890301147) of the German Version of Stephen King's "IT" ("ES"). In both profiles there is credited "Michael Cole (1945)".
So this BY is not released, and the actor himself is born 1940 (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0170696/?ref_=nm_mv_close)

Any further information?

What does it mean when an "accepted" By has "(19??)"? Does that mean BY=0 (no birth year)?

You are right: the "(19??)" means, that for "the other" version(s) of this name no BY is available.
So if there are more than one, then you use Fake-BY like my "David Brown (90??)" - then ?? is filled by the number this person has on imdb, that menas my "David Brown (9030)" on imdb is "David Brown XXX"

What does this mean: Robert Young (1935-2011)?

Meany BY 1935 and already dead. I don't know why the death years are listed sometimes. Maybe there is another one with the same BY but still alive or with different death date?

Why no middle names?

I'd like to say that in most of the cases the names with a middle name are unique and are only used by one person? But if neccessary, they are bart of the BY-List like "Michael J. Fox"

And the dummy profile is my "guide", too:

Whenver one of the cast & crew in the dummy profile has a count higher than 1, I know that there is someone I need to check.

But by definition, they are two different people.

We have a lot of accepted/released birthyears. I'd like to say that only a few of them cover all the persons with the same name. Which means that there will always be someone else with no findable BY. And if I get a new profile without BY, at least I have exactly the same data locally then the contributor of this profile has.

If he forgot (or was not interested in) to use an accepted BY, then I can't change.

To check every new profile that way, another kind of tool would be neccessary, at least to compare if the new profile contains names of the BY list.

But if I don't have the name w/o BY, profiler uses the first version of this name WITH BY and this way the linkage is definitely wrong. If the contributor didn't care, I can't change...

Now regarding the new tool I am about to start, it might help me to know: what do you plan to do with the cast / crew entries in the dummy profile(s)?

I have answere this twice: I keep the dummy profile in my wish list!

Why? You know "database repair"? Which deletes all unused cast & crew (if not customized to keep them)? But I wan't to delete the REALLY unused names ("combined" two or more versions of a name to the common name + credited as) and with the dummy profile all those newly "installed" names remain and (hopefully) new troubles with wrong birthyears (if they are correct in the database) are avoided. If I have an actor with no BY in my datbase and get a profile with it, it is used. If not, then the the first version of the name WITH BY is used, and keeping them "forever" (or at least as long as I enlarge my collection^^) solves this problem.

Well, as only the Export doesn't work and anything else does fine (and DJ Doena knows much more about those antique Windows-Codecs than me) I add whenever it is neccessary and how much there is neccessary. And even it is only 20 - 30 profiles a week

Is there anything the Export is really neccessary for? When I had my own site, it was, but as long as I don't have a new one it isn't.

But: You can be sure before I install your newly developed tool I'll do a backup. I only hope that the new tool doesn't crush my DB

The problem is that DVD Profiler is stuck in Windows XP 32-bit world with the known "foreign letters" ANSI technology on top. At some point you will just reach the natural limits of what this program is capable of.

As I got "enough" foreign films with special French, Scandinavian and other foreign letters, I would need to find out which profile(s) cause those trobles - if it depends on those special characters.

But doing that search with a database of that size is something I simply don't have the time for. So far I didn't have any reason to export the database (might be neccessary if I will start a new homepage again - but actually that is a very BIG if). And in the past I tried several AddOns to find the reason for this problem (and others).... but we all know: More AddOns/Plugins, more danger to crash the database. And as I had this more than once....

Well, so I simply avoid all Tools I don't need. Which means that there are 2 constantly in use so far: Your "BulkEdit" and DJ Doena's "Initialize TVShow Child Profiles". And since I only work with those two, the number of datbase-crashes was reduced nearly to Zero.

I think I have answered this a couple of postings before:

Creating a fake profile (in my case in the wish list) with all the names to add without by is the ideal solution. Keeping the fake profile (never deleting it) avoids that they are deleted again by the database repair as unused.

If they come up with any new add, then I got the entries twice. So the only thing which gets "wrong" with that is the number of counts.

I think "credited as" is not relevant for birthyears. If it is "John Smith (1979) crediited as 'Johnny Smith'" it remains "John Smith (1979)".

Your last question: Definitely no! The list is not relevant for that tool for some reasons: I use several more regular/known birth years than are released so far and additionally countless fake profiles (which are accepted but never become kind of "official"). Take a look at the screenshot and you will see several "David Brown" with Fake-BY. So checking out the list would cause unneccessary troubles, espeially as there are also misspellings in the list, too (and some might disappear after a common name thread). As this list is never static, using it for your tool, it would need to be able to read the site and recognized every change. And that's impossible!

However if the xml export works for you, then my tool is not needed.

What GSyren created is "only" a listing. I hope I answered all your questions in one of my last postings?

And: I'd still prefer a tool which CREATES all the missing cast & crew w/o a birthyear for me (in the fake profile you mentioned before). So far it is "only" 469 entries to create... and doing that manually is hell of a job.

And if I think about that I am not done with the letter "C" of the birthyear-list and as I am actually only doing cast so far, there might be several thousands without a BY and that's simply too much to do manually.

So, dear mediadogg, the tool will be highly appreciated if it could do the job I would like it to and this way avoid countless hours of manual work.

The "F-Database" worked.... as I don't know if the backup then exports all cast & crew or only of the flagged F-Profiles, I can't say if the "BySpecial" of GSyren (thanks, at least I could try now) shows all actors missing the version w/o BY or only the 469 of the F-Profiles....

But even if they are all (so far) it would be hard to create each one manually.... that was the reason for my idea for a tool to do that job.

I tried the version to export "1 file per profile".... but as this didn't last too long I stopped after about an hour (not even 1000 files/profiles then of more than 25.000)

And if that doesn't help, do a test partial export in packages of 1000 profiles each and find the profile causing the export problems.

I'd like to say: I tried everything! Database repair I do at least once a month. I backuped the whole database and created a new one from the backup. But even the new one was not able to export. I tried it with packs of 1000, but no matter, which 1000 I want to export, always at 99 % the error-pop-up tells me a astory... so I gave up

Sorry, I was a little bit too busy to go deep in all posts (trying to export an xml lasted a long time) and as it didn't work I forgot to answer you.

Export works neither with the full database nor with only a few. I had this problem in the past, and there was no solution to solve this.

So I need to find another way....

Well, the idea of the "fake profile" you mentioned is wonderful for two reasons: All the cast & crew with no BY could be added there, and if I keep the fake profile (I think about the wishlist), with the "repair database" I can remove all other cast & crew not used anymore (emptied by common name, correcting misspelling etc.)

I know the duplicates file... well, in theory this could be a good basic to handle this problem. So far it shows similar entries, but at least in theory (don't know the programming and processes working behind) it could be used just to find actors with birthyear.

I also don't know if it helps to "interact" with the program that way: I used the right click to filter actors to show only "names with birthyear".

Maybe (oh, if I would know how to program) the tool could work that way:
- I create the fake profile and start the tool
- The tool doesn't even need to check, if there is an version with no BY of any entry with BY
(- The tool uses the filter of "with birthyear only")
- For ever cast & crew with birthyear, the tool does like mentioned with the pictures before: "create new entry". If already available, the tool cancels the actual add and goes to the next name with BY

Is this an idea?

So yeah, it's just a listing. If it's no help at all, then sorry!

Well, I wanted to try... but I can't! I would need to export my (whole) collection to xml and export doesn't work anymore. It runs and runs... and at about 99 % the Error-Popup comes... I got an xml but with Zero KB size. So in this case I got no chance to try it.

Is there any chance that the tool opens the "Actors"-File in the programm folder (no idea if the DAT or the IDX is relevant) but this would avoid (the for me impossible) export

Thanks a lot! I'll give it a try as soon as possible.
But you say it's a listing "only"? Causing manual work to do the creation?

For sure I don't want to sound outrageous in any way, but just imagine having 20.000+ actoris with a BY.... horrible imagination to create new entries for only 10 % of them

If you do a full database repair, the name will be gone.

This only happens by a full repair, but with the customized repair, I only have to uncheck the "delete unused cast/crew"

Quoting GSyren:
Quote:
So if an update comes down without a BY for an actor that should have a BY, then it will accepted without a BY since there is such a cast entry in your database. Thus you get an incorrect linkage to the Non-BY actor.

But if the profile I download should have a BY but doesn't and there is no entry with BY available, Profiler automatically uses the first entry WITH BY. So to stay at "David Brown": If I wouldn't have the none-BY-Version and download a new profile with no BY (altough it should have e. g. 1947) then I also get the wrong linkage as profiler then uses "David Brown (1916)"

I am not sure how many people have ever recognized how HUGE this problem is! Like mentioned in former posts: Actually I am working very hard to check and correct the BYs. For some there have been the wrong ones, for countless the BY is accepted and official but most of the profiles including that person never got an update (that's another very huge problem) and this way: It is nice to have the Birthyears, but quite less of the profiles really have them.

But maybe (a very big MAYBE) your suggestion would cause another tool: Similar to the duplicate search something like a "BY-Search". To talk about myself: Whenever I add a new disc, I do this in "ordered". If cast & crew is available, I move it to "owned", if not, I first type them down and then I move it to owned. So to solve that problem you mentioned: A tool which "knows" all the accepted/released BYs and checks all cast & crew in any profile I want it to check if there is any cast/crew WITHOUT a BY but is in the list WITH a BY. So then I know that I have to check this person if I allready have it in my database with one BY or another.

Now I only can hope that the description of the 2nd tool wasn't too complicated. The wrong linkages I am actually cleaning up (and this will last months), and to avoid to new ones, only this 2nd check-up-tool could handle that.

It is not profile-specific..... but as an example, I'll try it more visually....

I start the tool at any profile (I am quite sure that I need to start it twice, once for cast and once for crew) and the tool checks out all actors in the cast list. Then it reachs an actor with a birthyear:

The tool now sees, that "David Brown" WITH Birthyear already is in the list WITHOUT Birthyear, too. So it can go on in the list. Then it reachs another actor with a birthyear:

So "James Anderson" is only available WITH Birthyear. So now the tool directly goes to

And creates this "James Anderson" WITHOUT a Birthyear

When this is done the tools goes on through the whole list of cast and does the same job for every actory where it is neccessary.

@mediadogg: Would you be so kind and give me a link for CLTBoss?

And: Your second post I am absolutely unable to understand.

There are several tools available which can do this and that. A read several descriptions but was not able to find THAT function I (and in my opinion: all users) would need to have. So I started this thread especially for programmers like you who know their tools much better as any description could be.

As I have given up the hope for any update in close future, I try to solve a problem of an extraorginary size.

Just for your imagination: I am not done with letter B of the BY-List (http://www.luigifilocamo.it/BY.html) and had to correct actors in more than 100 profiles. Only a few of them are wrong in the central database, but the rest got wrong by download as I didn't have actors w/o birthyear. Until I am done with the complete list it might last months. And especially then I want to avoid that such mistakes become part of my local database again.

Actually I am very deep in comparing my profiles with the list of accepted birthyears (and I have to do countless corrections) and this way got to a problem of the update process which probably could be solved with a tool of a programmer?

The problem is: If there is a cast- (or crew-)member only WITH a birthyear and a new profile to be added has the same person WITHOUT birthyear, profiler doesn't create the one but uses the first available one WITH birthyear - and this way the data is wrong as soon as the profile is added.

So it would be neccessary to have every cast & crew WITHOUT a birthyear as soon as there is the same name WITH birthyear in the local database. As there are countless names in each databse meanwhile, I hopefully think that an AddOn could solve this problem within minutes?

It only has one job: Checking the cast- & crew-lists, and whenever it finds a person with BY, the next check is, if the same name is available without BY, and if not: create one!

Is this technically possible? Without causing too much work for you?
